Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Dave Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 39th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.838/203.37, Now #13; Best prior run: 8.585/108.99, Was #27
Right Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 7.804/133.54, Now #28; Best prior run: 12.451/70.64, Was #28

2:31 PM Current weather conditions: 71 degrees, 36 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.02 inches and steady.

Both of these guys can bump Mike Corvo's 6.849 ET. Wilson gets in for now with a clean and straight pass. Haas has a big wiggle at mid track and has to shut down.

Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.891/201.04, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.935/201.40, Was #25
Right Lane: Nick Fratt No Time, Now #27; Best prior run: 7.293/194.55, Was #27

Fratt has problems after the burn out and is pushed back behind the line. Stevens makes a good pass, but just not good enough.

Left Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.895/200.80, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.930/200.08, Was #25

Watson will take a single pass this session and won't get in. High six eighties are cheap!

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.877/202.48, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.920/202.58, Was #25
Right Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 7.251/191.84, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.871/202.39, Was #21

No joy for these two in this tough field. Couldn't tell why Geoffrion shut off.

Left Lane: Jose Maldonado Runs 6.853/201.82, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.880/202.24, Was #23
Right Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 6.944/201.37, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.868/201.37, Was #20

Both cars are slower than Thursday.

Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.836/202.18, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.858/202.15, Was #20
Right Lane: Bob Glidden Runs 17.314/77.39, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.855/202.70, Was #19

It's warmer than yesterday, with a lot more sun on the track than we saw in Thursday's session. Many of the bikes struggled to improve too.

Glidden's engine bucked and snorted at the hit and he just motored on down the track. Edwards is able to improve and will get into the field for now. Allen Johnson is now on the bump with a 6.839.

Left Lane: Mike Corvo Jr Runs 6.792/202.97, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.848/201.91, Was #18
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 7.744/129.22, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.843/201.49, Was #17

Pawuk is loose and slows, while Corvo makes a big move up the ladder to just miss the top stop.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.837/202.58, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.839/202.55, Was #17
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.814/203.00, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.838/202.15, Was #16

Yates is now on the bump and makes a great pass into the current top half of the field. Johnson picks up just enough to stay in the field, as the rest of the cars are already qualified.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.821/202.33, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.824/203.31, Was #13
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.856/202.27, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.826/202.88, Was #14

Neither car will improve. Troy uses a lot of track and finishes the run near the guard rail, kicking up a lot of dust.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.782/203.55, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.821/203.16, Was #12
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.856/202.39, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.819/202.64, Was #11

Morgan jumps up to the current top spot with a lot of moving around as he went down the track. Alderman makes a good pass, but doesn't improve.

Left Lane: Barry Grant Runs 13.846/62.84, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.819/203.31, Was #11
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.824/203.22, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.814/202.94, Was #10

Grant has a lot of shake off the line and shuts down. Marnell improves on his speed, but slows slightly from yesterday.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.784/202.73, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.806/203.06, Was #8
Right Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.807/204.26, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.806/203.80, Was #7

Coughlin has a .993 sixty foot time and runs into the current #2 spot. The right lane seems to be a little more of a challenge and Connolly slows by .001 from yesterday.

Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.773/203.25, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.802/203.25, Was #6
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.812/203.74, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.806/204.17, Was #7

Allen was fast yesterday and is even faster today. He'll take over the current #1 spot. Again the right lane is just a little slower.

Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.786/204.32, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.786/204.45, Was #4
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.813/203.95, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.799/204.23, Was #6

Neither car can improve on yesterday's times and Allen Johnson will stay on the bump with a 6.837. 2:58 PM
