Top Alcohol Dragster Qualifying Notes, Final Session

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 39th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Darryl Hitchman Runs 5.604/255.92, Now #16; Best prior run: 5.884/246.21, Was #18
Right Lane: Mike Cofini Runs 5.497/262.79, Now #13; Best prior run: 5.478/261.27, Was #13

5:29 PM Current weather conditions: 61 degrees, 62 percent relative humidity, the barometer 30.05 inches and rising.

It's cold and humid!

It's Cold and Humid! Hitchman has big flames at the top end and will bump Eakins. Cofini stays consistent with another good pass.


Left Lane: David Wilson Runs 5.479/248.34, Now #15; Best prior run: 5.510/262.13, Was #15
Right Lane: Mitch Myers Runs 5.453/252.14, Now #11; Best prior run: 15.055/67.78, Was #22

A great side by side pass with both cars running a better ET, Myers is finally able to get a full pull and puts Dempke on the bump with a 5.486.

Left Lane: Marty Thacker Runs 5.355/265.17, Now #5; Best prior run: 10.173/110.84, Was #22
Right Lane: Don Hudson Runs 5.467/259.66, Now #14; Best prior run: 5.473/257.83, Was #13

Hudson and Thacker both improve, but Thacker is able to move into the current top half of the field. This will put Wilson on the bump with a 5.479.

Left Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.398/264.29, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.331/269.56, Was #3
Right Lane: Steve Federlin Runs 5.474/248.43, Now #9; Best prior run: 5.419/260.16, Was #9

Two good passes, but no improvements. Big header flames down the track for Shields. Neat!

Left Lane: Dave Hirata Runs 11.439/71.84, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.392/268.49, Was #7
Right Lane: Chris Lane Runs 6.149/173.65, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.402/136.97, Was #22

Lots of flames and then dropped cylinders, both cars shut off early.

Left Lane: Darren Nicholson Runs 5.421/261.42, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.446/260.81, Was #10
Right Lane: Randy Eakins Runs 5.584/254.81, Now #18; Best prior run: 5.620/247.70, Was #19

Eakins has a very weak burnout, but he still able to improve minimally. Nicholson has better numbers too, but will stay in the #10 spot for now.

Left Lane: Joey Severance Runs 5.412/263.05, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.466/262.18, Was #13
Right Lane: Alan Bradshaw Runs 6.593/148.59, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.291/254.76, Was #1

Bradshaw can't keep all the candles lit and has to shut off. Severance makes another good pass and will get into the current top half of the field.

Left Lane: Mike Austin Runs 5.611/255.19, Now #20; Best prior run: 5.749/243.33, Was #20
Right Lane: David Wells Runs 5.343/265.17, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.419/261.62, Was #9

Austin may be the last car to run that's not already in the field. He picks up almost .15 and still stays in the #20 spot. Wells makes a big statement in the blown dragster and jumps up into the current #4 spot.

Left Lane: Morgan Lucas Runs 5.341/265.38, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.352/265.06, Was #5
Right Lane: John Haley Runs 5.423/259.56, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.391/263.46, Was #7

Both cars run better, but only Lucas will improve.

Left Lane: Larry Miersch Runs 11.809/64.64, Now #12; Best prior run: 5.448/250.37, Was #12
Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 5.324/273.33, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.316/271.68, Was #2

Miersch is away with a strong leave, but the dragster makes a big move and he has to lift. Reichert isn't quite as quick as earlier, but runs a hugh 273.330 MPH.

Right Lane: Gary Anderson Runs 5.778/255.34, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.180/235.64, Was #22

Anderson's time would get you into a lot of fields, but not tonight. The 5.470 bump is just short of the record 5.464 field at Indy.
