By Dave Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 39th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Right Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.831/203.25, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.819/203.31, Was #11

11:06 AM Lots of bumping and improving in the Pro Bike session, so this could be interesting. Grant is in already and will be on a single to start the session. No help on this pass.

Right Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.812/203.89, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.895/200.80, Was #25

Watson is also a single pass and he jumps way up the ladder and just misses the top half of the field. Mike Edwards is on the bump with a 6.836 ET.

Left Lane: Bob Glidden Runs 6.923/203.46, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.855/202.70, Was #21
Right Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.906/201.52, Now #25; Best prior run: 6.891/201.04, Was #25

Neither driver can improve. Both of them were using a lot of race track on the top end.

Left Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 6.801/202.91, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.804/133.54, Was #28
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 7.533/139.20, Now #25; Best prior run: 6.877/202.48, Was #24

Gaines is way loose and has to lift. Haas is straight and true to move into the current #7 spot. Krisher is now on the bump with a 6.826.

Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.824/202.33, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.843/201.49, Was #20
Right Lane: Jose Maldonado Runs 6.836/202.70, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.853/201.82, Was #21

Pawuk runs quick enough to take over the bump spot. Maldonado improves too, but not enough.

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.816/202.94, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.871/202.39, Was #24
Right Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.780/204.23, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.838/203.37, Was #21

Both cars make a big move into the field, with Wilson just missing the current #1 spot. Alderman's Dodge is now on the bump with a 6.819 ET.

Left Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 10.142/86.11, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.868/201.37, Was #24
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.803/203.86, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.837/202.58, Was #22

Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.778/203.52, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.836/202.18, Was #22

Both cars should be able to get back in the show. Shows what I know. Edwards has the power and moves well up into the current #2 spot. Alderman slows from yesterday's times.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.795/203.46, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.826/202.88, Was #21
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.803/203.55, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.821/202.33, Was #19

Right Lane: Mike Corvo Jr Runs 6.790/203.12, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.792/202.97, Was #7

POW! Marnell makes a statement with a great ET and MPH. Corvo improves, but will move down a spot. Watson now has the bump spot with a 6.812.

Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.784/203.19, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.814/203.00, Was #17
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.733/205.51, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.786/204.45, Was #7

Yates was just bumped and runs well enough to get into the current top half of the field. In the other lane, Anderson crushes the field with a tremendous ET and MPH.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.780/204.85, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.799/204.23, Was #11
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.774/203.52, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.784/202.73, Was #8

... and the hits just keep on coming. Two more great passes and Johnson moves into the top half of the field. Connolly on the bump at 6.806 and should be safe for this session.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.773/204.20, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.806/204.17, Was #15
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.788/204.35, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.782/203.55, Was #8

Johnson finds some ET and pushes Morgan into the bottom half of the ladder for now.

Left Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.754/204.63, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.806/203.80, Was #16
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.773/204.08, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.773/203.25, Was #4

Allen won't repeat as low qualifier, as he runs an identical ET to his best of the weekend. Connolly in the Bullet "Grumpy's Toy" Chevy moves well off the bump and into the #2 position. 11:31 AM
