Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Dave Gerard

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Pro Stock at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, 39th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.851/201.76, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.891/201.04, Was #26

3:00 PM We are down to the last chance for the Pro Stock race cars. Stevens will start the session with a single. He makes his best pass of the weekend, but won't make the show. Troy Coughlin is on the bump with a 6.803.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.830/202.48, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.877/202.48, Was #26

Gaines had handling problems last session and will also make a single pass. He too improves, but not enough to get in this tough show.

Left Lane: Jose Maldonado Runs 6.834/201.94, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.836/202.70, Was #23
Right Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 6.835/202.64, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.868/201.37, Was #26

Almost identical ET's as they run together down the track. Good runs, but not good enough.

Left Lane: Barry Grant Runs 6.822/202.85, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.819/203.31, Was #19
Right Lane: Bob Glidden Runs 6.812/203.98, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.855/202.70, Was #26

Glidden goes back into the water and does a second small burnout before heading to the line. Two more try and two more go home. The weather has started to cool off, it's still not as good as the conditions in the third session this morning.

Left Lane: Ben Watson Runs 6.831/202.91, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.812/203.89, Was #18
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.836/202.24, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.824/202.33, Was #22

Lots of great low 6.8 passes, but no one is able to qualify so far.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.784/203.74, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.803/203.55, Was #16
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.822/203.28, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.819/202.64, Was #21

Troy likely tough he would be bumped by now. He has the tune up and pulls up the ladder into the current #11 spot. Alderman had better numbers down low, but couldn't improve and qualify.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.817/202.64, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.803/203.86, Was #16
Right Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.806/203.40, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.816/202.94, Was #19

Johnson will stay on the bubble and Geoffrion misses the show by .003 seconds.

Left Lane: Mike Corvo Jr Runs 6.807/202.55, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.790/203.12, Was #13
Right Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 6.825/202.91, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.801/202.91, Was #15

They say that all the cars yet to run are in the show. No improves, as both cars slow from their prior efforts.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.786/203.43, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.782/203.55, Was #10
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.808/203.68, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.795/203.46, Was #14

Looks like improving this session will be more than tough! Good passes to set up for tomorrow's eliminations.

Left Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.824/203.86, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.780/204.23, Was #9
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.807/202.79, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.784/203.19, Was #12

Wilson has the back end of the car move around a little off the line and it may have cost him a few thousands.

Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.801/202.48, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.778/203.52, Was #7
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.801/204.23, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.780/204.85, Was #8

Almost exactly the same numbers for both cars. Warren has a little more top end power to run a better MPH.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.760/203.03, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.774/203.52, Was #6
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.791/204.29, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.773/204.20, Was #4

Coughlin is the only significant change so far this session as he moves up to the current #3 session.

Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.767/203.74, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.773/204.08, Was #6
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.799/203.80, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.764/204.26, Was #4

Allen moves up a stop with a few thousands improvement.

Left Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.741/205.01, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.733/205.51, Was #1
Right Lane: Dave Connolly Runs 6.767/204.51, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.754/204.63, Was #2

The last two cars come to the line to wrap up 2003 PS Qualifying. Good passes for both cars in these conditions and the field is set!
