HOLLYWOOD --
Automobile Club of Southern California's Jeff Prokop announced Bernstein as the winner of the award determined by a select 39-member panel of auto racing journalists. Bernstein received $20,000 and a commemorative trophy. "We are thrilled to have been chosen as Rookie of the Year", said an excited Bernstein. "It's been a real roller coaster ride for us this season, with the highs of the victories early on, and then the accident and the recovery process. "We want to thank the Automobile Club of Southern California for this honor as well as the media members who voted for us. "This wouldn't have been possible without the efforts of Tim and Kim Richards and the entire team. We have the best team out there. Without support from our sponsors, Budweiser, Lucas Oil and Mac, we wouldn't be here. "We want to thank the fans who sent emails, cards and letters. The fans kept my spirits up and helped me through the recovery process. "I also want to thank my mom, dad and step mom, Sheryl, for being with me every step of the way," concluded an emotional Bernstein. Bernstein is looking forward to his return as pilot of the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster in the 2004 season. Highlights of the NHRA POWERade Awards Ceremony are scheduled to air Sunday, November 23 on ESPN2 from 3 - 4 p.m. ET.
