Bringing Together South Florida’s “Phattest” and Fastest

JUPITER, Fla. -- It’s just about this time of year that the weather shift takes place here in Florida. There’s no other person who welcomes the cool blast of northern temperatures quite like your die-hard drag racer. On December 20-21, 2003 Moroso Motorsports Park will host the KFC & BUZZ 103.1 Sport Compact Winter Showdown, presented by Arrigo Dodgeland, Steeda Autosports and BFGoodrich Tires. The last racing event for the 2003 year, Moroso will turn the track over to 4 and 6 cylinder rides from all over the southeast. The event consists of quarter-mile Drag Racing, an awesome Show-n-Shine, a FEAR FACTOR CHALLENGE, a MECA BOOM & ZOOM sound contest, a Burnout Contest, Manufacturers’ Marketplace and Triple Xtreme Street Bike Stunt Team. We’ve seen them on the street, but this is the place to see real racing.

Moroso’s 2003 Sport Compact series began in April with one of the best crowds ever during the NHRA BFGoodrich Tires Sport Compact Nationals. BFGoodrich Tires joins Moroso again December 21st by supporting the racers who support Moroso. BFGoodrich is giving away two sets of Drag Radial tires to the winner and runner-up of the Heads Up Street Legal class. (14.00 seconds and slower). Since this is the season finale, BFGoodrich Tires is tossing in an additional cash giveaway of $3,000 to those who have won their class in each of the series’ races.

The quarter-mile action will include four Heads-up classes: Pro Outlaw, Quick, All Motor and Street Legal. Bracket racers running quicker than 13.99 will compete in the Super Comp class while all others run in Super Stock. The racing classes have been formatted to accommodate the various skill levels of racers and vehicles with any performance classification.

Pro Outlaw is the quickest class in this Sport Compact Series and has seen E.T.s as low as 7.13 seconds. Pro Outlaw racer Alex Dieguez of West Palm Beach, runner-up in the 2002 Moroso Sport Compact Championship Points Series, will be on the drag strip with his ’82 Toyota Corolla trying to put numbers on the scoreboard in the 7-second range. Dieguez will rematch his #1 competitor, Carlos Gonzales who will pilot his ’93 RX-3.

The action on Moroso’s quarter-mile extends into the paddock as MECA (Mobile Electronics Competition Association, Inc.) is conducting a BOOM & ZOOM. This competition puts the sound of the ride together with a time slip from the drag strip to find the best blend of shift and style. State records are on the line so there will be professional MECA judges on hand to gauge each system.

The Show-n-Shine at the Sport Compact events showcase some of South Florida’s hottest rides. A few classes have been modified to help balance out the show competition. The Honda class has been broken into a “Civic” and an “Other” category to help even the playing field. For all you truck lovers, Import Sport Truck and Domestic Sport truck are among the classes. The 15 "Awards of Excellence" are still up for grabs. There are also 24 specialty awards, including three that will receive $100 cash each: “Best of Show, “Best Team” and "Club Participation".

If you see something you like, you can stroll through the Manufacturers’ Midway and find the latest in new and aftermarket products on display and for sale. Also on display will be the new Dodge 2004 lines. Arrigo Dodgeland and the Dodge Dealers will have this as well as other new sports cars and trucks ready for the taking.

Gates open at 4pm on Saturday, December 20th, and 9am on Sunday, December 21st. Saturday’s features include Test & Tune for any vehicle and tech will be open for racers from 4pm until 10pm. On Sunday, the Show-n-Shine registration will be from 9am to 1pm, Time Trials and Qualifying for the Heads-up classes will be from 9:30am -12:30pm, with Elimination’s beginning at 1pm. Triple Xtreme will perform at 11am, 12:30pm and again at 2pm. The MECA BOOM & ZOOM participants will get their turn on the drag strip at 2:30pm with the awards being given out on the stage at 3:30, immediately following the Show-n-Shine awards which are at 3pm. You WILL NOT want to miss the return of the FEAR FACTOR CHALLENGE at 1:30pm on Sunday only. Leave the gag reflex at home and compete for cash prizes.

Saturday night is “Girls’ Night Out” as all girls get in FREE. Spectator tickets at the gate will be $25 for a two-day ticket, $15 for a one-day, $60 for a race ticket and $20 for a Saturday only Test & Tune ticket. Show-n-Shine entries are $20 and children under 12 are FREE. The MECA BOOM & ZOOM has 3 chances of winning for one price. Entry is a separate charge of $30 for members and $35 for non-members and includes all three competitions. Discount spectator tickets are available for $13 at Murray’s Speed & Custom locations in North Miami, Kendall and Pompano Beach.
