CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- After wading through nearly 4,000 applications for his "Nitro Intern" program, Bob Gilbertson and his crew have picked the winners for the first six races of the 2004 NHRA POWERade season.

"We received some amazing emails and letters and we read each and everyone of them and narrowed it down to a reasonable number of candidates for each race" said Gilbertson. "I got together with my crew last weekend at our open-house and we went through them and we picked someone who thought would be the right fit for Pomona, Phoenix, Gainesville, Las Vegas, Houston and Bristol. We'll announce the winners for the second quarter of the season sometime down the road when we catch our breath. I wish we could have picked everyone as there were so many people who applied who are as passionate about drag racing as me and my team are."

The winners are:

POMONA - Michelle Reed of Creston, CA will team up with our 2003 World Finals intern (and inspiration for this program) George "Road Hog" Wallace for the NHRA K&N Filters Winternationals.

PHOENIX - Brandon Halliburton, a 19 year-old from Phoenix who is currently attending the Universal Technical Institute auto/diesel program.

GAINESVILLE - Robert Juarbe a fire-Fighter from Ocala, Florida.

LAS VEGAS - Gregory Goldstein, son of the legendary Funny Car driver (Ramchargers - Candies & Hughes) Leroy Goldstein, the first Nitro Funny Car driver in the six-second range.

HOUSTON - David Pace who drove the Carroll Bros. AA/FD in the early-80s and was runner-up at Indy in 1981.

BRISTOL - Michael Lovell, a teacher from Charlotte, NC.

Full details on each winner will be released the week prior to the event. Applicants who applied for the events where the NHRA runs twice each year will have their applications placed in the running for the second event.
