IRWINDALE, Calif. -- Pit crews from the NHRA, NASCAR and IRL will participate in a special pit crew challenge on The Learning Channel (TLC) program “Junkyard Wars” November 19-22 at Irwindale Speedway. These highly skilled mechanics will build race cars from old car parts and junkyard scraps and will contest their creations on a drag strip, road course and a half-mile oval to determine which team can conquer three different forms of motorsport. Representing the NHRA and the drag racing community are four team members of Don Prudhomme Racing. The four drag racing team members making up “The Hot Rod Heroes” will compete against “The Stock Car Stars” from Rusty Wallace’s NASCAR Winston Cup team and “The Indy Idols” from Helio Castroneves and Gil de Ferran’s Indy Racing League teams. The first three days of the competition will take place at “Junkyard Wars” set in Sun Valley, Calif. Starting on Nov. 19, teams will scavenge for parts and collect them to build and test their creations on Nov. 20. The final safety check occurs on Nov. 21. Teams will compete against each other in two different one-eighth mile drag races and a one-third mile road course for points to be applied toward the team’s starting position during the race on the Irwindale Speedway half-mile oval. All four team members will serve as drivers in the four different races. The team winning the oval race will be declared the overall competition winner. TLC will tape a two hour special for their weekly Emmy nominated series, “Junkyard Wars”, to air in the Spring of 2003. “Junkyard Wars” gives fabrication teams 10 hours to create the most successful contraption to complete specified tasks with parts they locate and recover out of a junkyard.
