CHICAGO --
IHRA Top Fuel champion Clay Millican has been nominated for the second consecutive
year for the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association (AARWBA) Auto
Racing All-American Team. Also this week, the 35-year-old Top Fuel sophomore was
honored as the Professional Driver of the Year in the 3rd annual CompetitionPlus.com
Awards.
Millican clinched the IHRA Top Fuel championship after a record-setting six
consecutive national event victories behind the wheel of the Werner Enterprises Top
Fuel Dragster. The incredible streak broke a 26-year-old IHRA record held by "Big
Daddy" Don Garlits and tied Scott Kalitta's NHRA record of 19 consecutive round wins
set in 1994. Millican's crew chief, Mike Kloeber, led the Lehman Racing team to a
phenomenal 22-4 won/loss record (84% winning percentage) during the 10 races on the
IHRA schedule that featured Top Fuel. Millican grabbed the No. 1 qualifying
position seven times, set low ET of the event seven times, ran top speed of the
event five times and set both ends of the IHRA Top Fuel World Record
(4.631-seconds/320.13-mph). During the 2001 season Millican and the Werner
Enterprises dragster ran quicker (4.601-seconds) and faster (323.58-mph) than anyone
in IHRA history.
The second career nomination to the AARWBA Auto Racing All-American Team ballot is
another sparkling highlight to add to the incredible accomplishments Millican has
racked up during his second full-season in Top Fuel. "To go from driving a forklift
to being on the ballot for the AARWBA team alongside names like John Force and Jeff
Gordon is an honor that really speaks for itself. I am also extremely flattered
that the readers of CompetionPlus.com voted for me as their Professional Driver of
the Year. I love reading the CompetitionPlus.com e-zine and can't thank them enough
for its support. These accolades are only further testaments to the entire Lehman
Racing team and all of the hard work that it takes to reach this level of
competition. "
