GLENDORA, Calif. -- Lucas Oil has reached a multi-year agreement with the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) to become the title sponsor of the NHRA Drag Racing Series event at Seattle International Raceway beginning in 2002, NHRA Vice President of Sales and Business Development Bob Wagner announced today. The 15th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Northwest Nationals is scheduled for July 26-28, at Seattle International Raceway, Seattle. The race is the 14th of 23 events in NHRA Drag Racing Series for 2002, and will be televised by the ESPN family of networks. "Lucas Oil is thrilled to have the opportunity to become the title sponsor of the Lucas Oil NHRA Northwest Nationals," said Bob Patison, senior vice president and general counsel for Lucas Oil Products. "We've enjoyed being the main car sponsor for the John Lawson Funny Car program as well as a number of other teams, and we felt it was the right time and circumstances to become further involved with NHRA drag racing. The track in Seattle is undergoing some tremendous changes that will only benefit the racers, fans and sponsors." This commitment increases Lucas Oil Products involvement with the NHRA. In addition to their primary sponsorship of Lawson's Funny Car, Lucas Oil Products provided major sponsorship for Top Fuel driver Bruce Litton, Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Hector Arana, Federal-Mogul Funny Car driver Jason Rupert, and Super Comp drivers Tom Bayer and Morgan Lucas in 2001. Lucas Oil was also the title sponsor for the Fourth Annual Lucas Oil Products NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway in Joilet, Ill. in June. "The Fiorito family wants to put the racers and race fans as the top priority," Patison said. "They have made improving track safety a top priority. They also have the knowledge and passion to make Pacific Raceways one of the premier racing facilities in the west. This is a tremendous opportunity for us. We've been involved in drag racing on many levels for the past 12 years, and this event should bring great exposure to Lucas Oil Products." Seattle International Raceway was recently purchased by Dan and Joe Fiorito. The new track name, Pacific Raceways, will take affect Jan. 1, 2002. Lucas Oil Products has been directly involved in the American racing industry through multiple vehicle sponsorships and racing event promotions. Lucas racing products have proven themselves in NHRA, NASCAR, IHRA, IHBA, SCORE and many other forms of motorsports throughout the country.
"It's gratifying to see Lucas Oil Products keep expanding their involvement with the
NHRA by becoming the title sponsor of another event," said Wagner. "They have
continued to show their support for NHRA Winston Drag Racing through their
sponsorship of drivers in a variety of categories, from Funny Car to Super Comp.
The Lucas Oil NHRA Northwest Nationals will certainly become one of the leading
motorsports events in the west and we look forward to continued growth in the
future."
