GLENDORA, Calif. -- Today the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) solidified its commitment to its national and divisional sportsman drag racing series program formally known as the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series. Earlier today, Federal-Mogul announced their intentions to resign as series sponsor, opting to restructure their financial commitment to the popular sportsman series through a variety of bonus programs and other initiatives.

"The NHRA Sportsman Drag Racing Series is in a very strong position, both from a competitive and sponsorship perspective, and NHRA is committed to running a full schedule for 2002 and beyond," said Tom Compton, president of NHRA. "Soon, we will introduce a new divisional series sponsor who will help carry this growth forward and continue to build upon this foundation."

The NHRA Sportsman Series will maintain its current structure, in its entirety, for the 2002 season, regardless of the series sponsorship situation. "Sportsman racing is at the core of NHRA and, to that end, we will always continue to grow, support and encourage sportsman racing at all levels," said Compton.

Headquartered in Glendora, Calif., the NHRA is the primary sanctioning body for the sport of drag racing in the United States. In 2002, NHRA will present 23 national events through its NHRA Drag Racing Series. The NHRA has more than 80,000 members nationwide and more than 140 member tracks. The NHRA-sanctioned sportsman and bracket racing series' provide competition opportunities for drivers of all levels. The NHRA develops the stars of tomorrow by offering the NHRA Sportsman Drag Racing Series, NHRA Summit Import Drag Racing Series, NHRA Summit Racing Series and the NHRA Street Legal Program. The NHRA also offers the NHRA Castrol GTX Jr. Drag Racing League for youths ages 8 to 17.
