LAS VEGAS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Federal-Mogul Dragster at the Division Seven FMDRS Points Final listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Jason Howell No Time, Now #2 Right Lane: Kent Nuckols Runs 5.761/245.32, Now #1 3:08 PM Howell's wild-looking A-Fuel Altered was leaking fuel when they tried to fire the engine, so he didn't even get into the water. Nuckols' engine had a sour moment at mid track, but the run was relatively smooth and straight. Left Lane: Matt Seltzer Runs 7.045/126.99, Now #3 Right Lane: Tony Bartone Runs 5.737/240.68, Now #1 Seltzer's car was out of the groove, over toward the wall, and he shut it down beyond half track. Bartone made a fairly good run, but dropped a cylinder. Left Lane: Karl Brounkowski Runs 5.692/255.92, Now #1 Right Lane: Steve Federlin Runs 5.987/168.98, Now #4 Nice run by Brounkowski. Federlin's run looked even better to half track, but then he had problems, his chutes were out well before the finish line, the reason not clear from here. Left Lane: Dave Hirata Runs 5.601/253.14, Now #1 Right Lane: Brian Hough Runs 8.349/97.55, Now #7 Both cars shook on the launch, Hirata driving through it and Hough trying to pedal his way out of the shake, but failing and shutting down. Left Lane: Gary Anderson Runs 6.240/235.31, Now #7 Right Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.489/260.46, Now #1 Shields' car let out a flash of flame with a loud POP at the end of his burnout, but he backed up and staged normally, so it apparently wasn't anything to worry about. He made the entire run out of the groove, to the right, and still eclipsed all prior runs! Anderson's car shook the tires and lost a lot of momentum early in the run. Left Lane: Larry Miersch No Time, Now #11 Right Lane: Tony Meredyk No Time, Now #12 Miersch continues to have teething problems with his new car, despite the sporty leopardskin head blankets. They pushed the car away before firing the engine. Then Meredyk lost fire at the end of his burnout with a loud POP. Left Lane: Darren Nicholson Runs 5.648/252.71, Now #3 Right Lane: Darryl Hitchman Runs 5.732/228.85, Now #5 Two pretty good runs here, Hitchman right with Nicholson to the 1,000-foot marker and then losing ground quickly. Left Lane: Kevin Brown Runs 13.071/54.38, Now #13 Right Lane: Don Hudson Runs 5.707/207.08, Now #5 Brown's car dropped several cylinders immediately and he shut it off. Hudson was on a good run, about 0.07 seconds behind Shields at 1,000 feet, and then there was a loud BANG and a loud whine as his engine expired and his car slowed abruptly. Left Lane: Paul Jones Runs 5.606/255.53, Now #3 Right Lane: Brandon Henkelman Runs 5.609/256.16, Now #4 Nice side-by-side runs here, clean and straight. Left Lane: Brandon Bernstein Runs 5.592/244.87, Now #2 Right Lane: Mike Strasburg Runs 8.698/116.02, Now #16 Bernstein's car left hard, posting a quick (for A-Fuel) 0.922 60-foot time and went right down the groove on a smooth run. Strasburg shook, skated out of the groove, and lifted.
