BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Nostalgia Top Fuel at the Goodguys Fuel and Gas Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Lee Jennings Jr. Runs 7.171/163.81, Now #1 Right Lane: John Edmunds Runs 9.377/86.15, Now #2 10:58 AM Fire the first pair! The call is out and the fire pair cackles to life. Jennings puts out holes and Edmunds has problems keeping the front wheels on the ground. Left Lane: Mark Malde Runs 6.653/151.10, Now #2 Right Lane: Brendan Murry Runs 6.516/222.71, Now #1 This one is way to exciting. Both cars were getting very loose at the top end, just before the lights. Malde clicks it early but Murry tries to get a full pull. There's a big cloud of dust at the finish line and it appears that Murry's dragster might have scraped the railing just a bit. Word from the finish is that Murry and car are ok. We are cleaning the Malde lane after the dust clears. Left Lane: Lee Jennings Runs 6.070/234.65, Now #2 Right Lane: Rick McGee Runs 6.047/222.33, Now #1 It took a few minutes but we're back in business. Great side by side 6.0 passes. McGee takes the low ET spot for the moment and Jennings Sr. moves in right behind him. Left Lane: Tim Gibson Runs 14.030/58.18, Now #8 Right Lane: Gerry Steiner Runs 9.759/87.56, Now #7 You get three hard blips of the throttle during the burnout so it must be Gerry Steiner. Both cars fall to tire smoke and slow before half track. Left Lane: Kirk Kuhns Runs 6.596/228.89, Now #5 Right Lane: Dale Pulde Runs 6.148/229.53, Now #3 Kuhns was trailing either fuel or smoke from start to finish but still makes a big mph charge. Pulde's pass was a bit cleaner and he moves into the #3 spot in the field. Left Lane: John Shoemaker Runs 6.740/185.64, Now #8 Right Lane: Rich Howell Runs 6.383/231.06, Now #4 Competition Eliminator racer, Rich Howell, pulls into the right lane to face John Shoemaker. Shoemaker appeared to have holes out all the way. Howell makes a soft opening pass but still nets the #4 spot. Left Lane: Jack Harris Runs 6.104/243.24, Now #3 Right Lane: Bill Dunlap Runs 6.155/226.75, Now #5 Another great side by side qualifying pair. Both drivers left together and stayed that way to the finish. That's top speed for Harris. Left Lane: Glenn Hutchison Runs 8.000/116.61, Now #13 Right Lane: Kent Terry Runs 6.570/221.29, Now #8 Terry sits at the starting line until Hutchison actually finished his run. Hutchison got to about half track and his racer tried to make a right turn on him. At one point both tires on the left side were off the ground. He backed off and got the car straightened out. That was was when Terry left and completed a run the left him on the bump. Left Lane: Bob Muravez No Time, Now #0 Muravez gets a single in the first round of qualifying. This car and driver combo has been hot in the second half of the season with back to back wins. Left Lane: Bob Muravez Runs 6.324/207.13, Now #6 Right Lane: Jim Boyd Runs 7.551/124.87, Now #14 Muravez, in the Western Hoist car has been hot with back to back wins. Boyd drives around the water and directly stages. Boyd spins the tires at half track and Muravez gets into the 'A' field. Left Lane: Denver Schutz Runs 6.244/230.59, Now #6 Schutz gets a single and makes the field. Murry is now bumped from the field and Howell replaces him on the bump. Left Lane: Jim Murphy No Time, Now #21 Right Lane: Rance McDaniel Runs 6.059/236.53, Now #2 This is for #1 on the Nitronic Research 'List'. Murphy challenged the Champion Speed Shop crew for the top spot and this is it. Great race! They were side by side until half track when Murphy's ride got very loose and crossed the center stripe. McDaniel had his hands full of the small block powered racer but makes it to the finish. McDaniel keeps the Nitronic #1 but can only muster the #2 spot in the field. That was the final pair of the session so we'll be back around 3:00 PM.
