LAS VEGAS -- In the final rounds of qualifying at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, more than 875 competitors saw Federal-Mogul Dragster pilot Duane Shields and Federal-Mogul Funny Car veteran Marc White take home the Sealed Power Low Qualifier honors in their respective fields. Shields of Las Vegas, Nev., made the quarter-mile run in 5.429 seconds at 262.49 mph to put him in the number one position. Shields' Short Line Express sponsored dragster raced past the other nineteen competitors with his outstanding run. Said Shields, "We're really pleased with the way the car ran." Adding, "We hope the car performs the same in the first round."
Top qualifiers in other classes are Dennis Radford of Baker, Ore, in Comp; Jeff Taylor of Lumberton, N.C., in Super Stock; and Neil Smedley of Phoenix, Ariz., in Stock. The five competitors will share the $2,500 Sealed Power Low Qualifier bonus. Eliminations begin Sunday at 8:00 a.m. Gates at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway open at 7:00 a.m. Second round of eliminations in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car is scheduled for noon.
