Neither car got down the track very well last round so Payne's 6.62 got choice over Smith. Smith gets a few hundreths in the bank and holds Payne off until about 1000 feet. Payne takes the stripe and goes into the final. Margin of victory = 0.008 seconds (approximately 3 feet). Payne will have lane choice over Pat Austin in the final.
