CHICAGO-2 - Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #1

JOLIET, Ill. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the Inaugural NHRA Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:


Left Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 7.104/191.92, Now #1
Right Lane: Bo Nickens Runs 8.750/109.80, Now #2

Under overcast skies the temperature around 55 degrees, humidity is 77% and the barometer is 30.28 inches. Nickens with a 1.014-second 60-foot time, but then had problems.

Left Lane: Eric Shelton No Time, Now #4
Right Lane: Kevin Lawrence Runs 7.046/195.62, Now #1

Shelton's car died when the light turned green. Lawrence was trailing a lot of smoke from half track on.

Left Lane: Larry Peternel Runs 7.141/192.88, Now #3
Right Lane: Larry Nance Runs 12.070/72.06, Now #5

Peternel was real loose all the way down the quarter-mile, but stayed with it. Nance had a lot of tire spin right off the starting line and clicked it off around the 330-foot mark.

Left Lane: Ray Franks Runs 6.899/198.85, Now #1
Right Lane: Mike Weinle Runs 7.016/196.90, Now #2

Franks with a 1.022 60-foot time and his best pass of the season, just missing his career best by 0.007 seconds.

Left Lane: Tony Gillig Runs 6.901/199.26, Now #2
Right Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 7.168/188.17, Now #7

Gillig with a great 0.996 second 60-foot time and just misses his career best pass by 0.001 seconds, and does run a career best mph here.

Left Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 6.893/199.49, Now #1
Right Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 6.899/200.47, Now #2

Blakeney with a great 60-foot time 0.996 seconds and season best pass. Hammonds was real loose on the starting line, but he stayed with it. Hammonds is to make an announcement before round two, rumor has it that he is going to retire from Basketball and go Drag Racing full time next year.

Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 6.950/200.00, Now #6
Right Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 6.863/200.14, Now #1

Nobile with a 0.997 60-foot time but then got real loose and close to the wall. Patrick with a great looking pass.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.845/201.55, Now #1
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 8.676/108.55, Now #13

Troy with his best pass of the season and just misses a career best pass by 0.001 seconds. Johnson was real loose around 330 feet and clicked it off.

Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 8.678/110.79, Now #15
Right Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.943/197.57, Now #7

Smith was real loose right off the starting line and clicked it off.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.876/201.04, Now #3
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 8.152/123.86, Now #15

Gaines was skating all over the track until half-track and then he clicked it off.

Left Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.853/201.13, Now #2
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 7.868/129.60, Now #16

Martino with a 0.991 seconds 60-foot time the quickest of the round so far, and his best pass of the season. Anderson was real loose and had to get out of it.

Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.853/201.55, Now #2
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 12.668/67.62, Now #23

Alderman with a good looking pass to take the number two spot. Marnell made a quick move toward the centerline.

Left Lane: Brad Jeter Runs 8.708/109.47, Now #21
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 16.855/61.09, Now #25

Kurt was out of the groove real early and off the throttle, while Jeter got real loose and clicked it off around half track.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.867/200.77, Now #6
Right Lane: Mark Osborne Runs 6.828/201.70, Now #1

This was a great side-by side drag race with both having low 1.000 second 60-foot times and Osborne taking away the number one spot.

Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.865/199.17, Now #6
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.884/199.79, Now #9

Pawuk with a 0.994 second 60-foot time and parlayed that into the number six spot for now.

Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.879/200.41, Now #10
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.871/199.79, Now #8

A couple good 60-foot times, but they can only run good enough for the eight and ten spots.

Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.863/200.53, Now #5
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.913/200.56, Now #17

Yates back in the driver's seat after just being released from the hospital yesterday with good pass to get him in the show. Johnson does not make the cut after the first session, so we end this first session with Osborne on top and Gillig rounding out the top 16 with a 6.901.
