GOODGUYS - Nostalgia Top Fuel Round 1 Eliminations
By Darryl Jackman

LAS VEGAS - Results of round 1 eliminations in Nostalgia Top Fuel at the 12th Annual Goodguys Fall Classic:

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   6 Howard Haight 6.264 234.41 Q 2 Tim Gibson 6.239 237.05
 *****WINNER***** 1.742 6.616 154.16 E1 0.000 No Time
10:51 AM It's hot enough out here to wilt an aquanet hairdo! Temperature is approaching 100 degrees. These cars qualified in this kind of weather yesterday and there's only .08 between the top eight cars. The MBNA double up bucks will go to the Top Fuel 'A' group today. That means this group is running for 5K to win. This was a weird one. It appeared that Gibson had problems staging the Mastercam entry and he tried twice. After the second attempt the starter threw the switch and Haight gets the single. Strange.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   7 Jack Harris 6.285 233.36 Q 3 Bill Dunlap 6.241 223.47
                  0.496 7.617 135.41 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.577 6.128 225.86
It's been reported that the front wing was to low on the Mastercam car and caused the staging lights to malfunction. Now for this pair. Harris is currently leading the points in the Goodguys series. For this event he's qualified #7 and has his hands full against Dunlap. Harris was up in smoke and Dunlap pulls away for the win. Great pass in these conditions. McDaniel was an interested spectator as this gives him a chance to close the points.

   4 Jim Murphy 6.247 233.84 Q 8 Roger Lechtenberg 6.295 241.32
                  0.485 7.207 167.91 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.512 6.990 244.25
Big tire smoking contest between this pair. We looked through a wall of smoke at the line and all we could hear was the rise and fall of Hemi RPM all the way down. Take a look at the top speed on the Lechtenberg. This was top speed of the event on what would be considered a broken run in modern Top Fuel. The bad news is that the safety crew is cleaning the lane behind the winner.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   5 Denver Schutz 6.255 208.55 Q 1 Rance McDaniel 6.215 207.69
                  0.453 6.281 228.96 E1 *****WINNER***** 0.450 6.221 199.97
It's a long way from this but, if McDaniel wins the event he will only be two points behind Jack Harris. Both drivers deep stage and leave together. McDaniel gets the win with smoke out of the left back on the small block.
