FMDRS 5-6 - Federal-Mogul Funny Car Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Bob Orme

MORRISON, Colo. - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at the NHRA Division 5 Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series Event listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Robert Kanenwisher No Time, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.233/233.36, Was #5
Right Lane: Steve Griboski No Time, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.330/228.38, Was #6

6:36 PM Griboski got almost sideways after the launch, straightened it out, then got loose on the top end, taking out the finish line timing cone. It wouldn't have mattered for Kanenwisher as he got loose at 200 feet and lifted.

Left Lane: Rex Williams Runs 6.676/209.79, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.800/202.00, Was #8
Right Lane: Bernie Harrington Runs 6.054/236.67, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.103/233.88, Was #2

Williams drove through some early tire shake and moved off the bubble.

Left Lane: Lawren Jones Runs 6.147/235.06, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.134/224.88, Was #3
Right Lane: Kirk Williams Runs 6.015/236.75, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.056/237.96, Was #2

Jones drifted toward the centerline at half track but was able to get the car back in the middle of the lane. Williams takes back the top spot for now.

Left Lane: Bob Hurley Runs 7.014/203.49, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.005/203.19, Was #9

Hurley on a solo pass. He misses the show this time. The car sounded like it didn't want to shift.

Left Lane: Vern Moats Runs 6.125/236.84, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.181/233.96, Was #4

Moats moves up a spot on the final FMFC pass of the day. Kirk Williams is on the pole with a 6.015 elapsed time and Michael Oliver rounds out the field in his 1981 Monza Funny Car with a 6.677 ET.
