FMDRS 6-6 - Federal-Mogul Dragster Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Michael L. Jex

MEDFORD, Ore. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Federal-Mogul Dragster at the Snap On Tools Valley Thunder Weekend listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Mike Austin Runs 6.515/156.88, Now #10; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Don Hudson Runs 5.683/253.07, Now #6; Best prior run: 14.740/65.51, Was #9

Mike just won a race in Spokane recently, he said he's trying to add some new parts to build a smaller motor next year. He ran well to half track, then a loud "POP" signaled his burst panel had let go, ending his bid.

Hudson's run was right down the middle of the lane, a big improvement over round one of qualifying.

Left Lane: Paul Jones Runs 5.514/255.76, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.587/252.98, Was #5

Jones made it look so easy - a little change to the clutch, perhaps a few other changes and viola! He improves by .07 to move up two spots in the program.

Left Lane: Brian Hough Runs 5.566/255.76, Now #5; Best prior run: 5.572/258.63, Was #5
Right Lane: Mark Hentges Runs 10.562/8.70, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.564/255.76, Was #4

Hought went .952 to 60-feet, quite a bit of tire shake once again. From there the Mike Johnson tuned machine thundered all the way to the finish line, but Brian lost too much ET at the start to move up the ladder. Hentges shook VERY HARD, and something broke. - Get the advil, or may an anvil - hey the computer spell checker suggested it, not me!....

Left Lane: Rick Santos Runs 5.415/258.74, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.402/260.19, Was #1
Right Lane: Duane Shields Runs 5.445/260.13, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.465/260.24, Was #2

These two drivers have battled a number of times this year, this should be a great matchup indeed. Both drivers did big burnouts, then the battle was on! .912 for Santos, .952 for Shields to the 60-foot timers. From there both drivers were moving around due to some tire shake, but it was very close all the way to the finish line.

Best of all, we still have the final round of qualifying at 8:00 tonight - the cooler air should make the round very interesting indeed!! 6:45 PM
