BAYTOWN, Texas - Abel Ibarra scored his first NHRA Summit Import Drag Racing Series victory Monday winning the Pro category title at the Toyo Tires NHRA Import Nationals at Houston Raceway Park.

Abel Ibarra
Adrian Sabori, Lisa Kubo, Ari Yallon and Scott Kelley also were winners of their respective categories at the inaugural Toyo Tires NHRA Import Nationals, the fifth of six races in the $120,000 NHRA Summit Import Drag Racing Series.

Ibarra blasted his Toyo Tires/K&N Air Filters-sponsored RX7 down the quarter-mile in 7.563 seconds at 176.46 mph to knock off Jose Torres, who was seeking his second consecutive victory. Ibarra's final round pass was low elapsed-time of the event.

Sabori earned his first victory of the year by knocking off Carlos Gonzalez to win the Modified class title. Sabori used a starting line advantage and times of 11.732 at 125.74 to hold off the slower Gonzalez and his numbers of 15.208 at 87.91

Kubo extended her lead in the Hot Rod category by recording her third victory in four races. Kubo posted a run of 9.242 at 154.62 to edge out Sacramento winner JoJo Callos and his times of 10.180 at 119.95. Kubo and her 1992 Honda dominated the event qualifying No. 1 and recording low elapsed-time and top speed of the event.

Yallon continued his perfect season by defeating Ken Scheepers for his fourth consecutive event victory in the Street Tire category. Yallon ran a 10.384 at 141.11, which was the low elapsed-time and top speed of the event, in his 1993 Mazda to hold off Scheepers times of 13.223 at 111.11.

Kelley followed up his victory in Sacramento by dominating the All Motor class in his 1969 Volkswagen. Kelley qualified No. 1 and recorded low elapsed-time and top speed of the event. Kelley's final round effort of 11.225 at 118.45 was good enough to hold off Adam Franzetti's 1989 Civic and his 11.803 at 115.13 pass.

The inaugural season of the NHRA Summit Import Drag Racing Series continues Sunday, Sept. 23 at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J. with the conclusion of the rain-delayed Nitto Tire NHRA Import Nationals.
