EARLVILLE, Iowa - Although the morning hours were not promising, NHRA and track officials were able to get in the final rounds of qualifying and time trials at the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event presented by Winnebago at Tri-State Raceway. The start of the day's activities was delayed by nearly three hours, but once underway, they did not stop. In fact, the track and air conditions were so good that speed and elapsed time (e.t.) records in Federal-Mogul Dragster were set and reset during the day. In Federal-Mogul Dragster, Denver resident Bruce Bowler, who was the runner-up here a year ago, was the No. 1 qualifier. Bowler made a 5.428-second, 252.73-mph record-setting pass to surpass Randy Meyer's 5.509-second, 244.43-mph effort. Bowler set the track e.t. record last year at 5.431 seconds. This year he reset the speed record as well at 257.51 mph. In Federal-Mogul Funny Car, Chuck Cheeseman, an out-of-division racer from Galena, Ohio, took the top spot. Cheeseman's 5.826-second, 250.48-mph pass eclipsed Sioux City resident Cy Chesterman's 5.864-second, 247.18 mph run. The top qualifiers in other categories were Brian Olson of Peru, Ind., in Competition Eliminator; Michael Mans of Rogers Minn., in Super Stock; and Chuck Blossom of Galena, Ohio, in Stock. Eliminations begin Sunday at 8 a.m. Gates at Tri-State Raceway open at 7 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars run at noon. For more information call the track, (319) 923-3724.
