FMDRS 5-5 - Federal-Mogul Dragster Qualifying Notes, Final Session

EARLVILLE, Iowa - Notes from final, round 2 qualifying in Federal-Mogul Dragster at the Winnebago Division Five Event Five listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:


Left Lane: Bruce Bowler Runs 5.473/257.51, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.428/252.73, Was #1
Right Lane: Lee Callaway Runs 5.769/244.56, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.892/239.36, Was #9

Bowler picked the front tires on the launch and set them down gently before he motored on through for the mph track record. He now has the two quickest passes of the weekend. Callaway got in the show with this pass, but will it be enough to hold on?

Left Lane: Billy Bybee Runs 5.762/250.83, Now #7; Best prior run: 5.694/248.68, Was #7
Right Lane: Edwin Schmeekle Runs 6.125/226.98, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.754/119.30, Was #12

Bybee drove through tire shake right off the starting line. Schmeekle dropped a cylinder or two right off the starting line and he will not make the show.

Left Lane: Jeff Hamelink Runs 5.756/212.28, Now #8; Best prior run: 5.923/243.96, Was #10
Right Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 13.756/59.83, Now #13; Best prior run: 8.363/101.52, Was #13

Reichert was up in smoke as soon as he hit the throttle and he will not make the show. Hamelink was on a good pass until the top end when there was a puff of smoke out of the engine. Hamelink will get in the show on the bump and that will send Callaway home.

Left Lane: Paul Jones Runs 5.520/255.60, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.554/256.04, Was #3
Right Lane: Phil Mass Runs 5.720/248.34, Now #6; Best prior run: 5.689/249.30, Was #6

Jones did a short burnout, but that did not hurt his pass. He improved on his earlier pass. Mass with no help here, but no problem either.

Left Lane: Jared Dreher Runs 11.352/70.77, Now #11; Best prior run: 5.946/228.60, Was #11
Right Lane: David Wells Runs 5.552/255.17, Now #4; Best prior run: 5.681/251.25, Was #5

Dreher launched into violent tire shake and clicked it off. Wells with a good looking pass and jumps into the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Marty Thacker Runs 5.829/241.54, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.845/240.25, Was #10
Right Lane: Randy Meyer Runs 9.189/101.92, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.509/244.43, Was #2

Meyer had problems right off the starting line spitting out a lot of raw fuel. Thacker with his best pass of the weekend, but it will not be enough to get him in the show.

Right Lane: Chris Ricketts Runs 5.520/257.81, Now #3; Best prior run: 5.593/242.19, Was #5

Ricketts launched hard and just blasted on through the quarter mile for the number three spot. That wraps up qualifying and Bowler holds on to the number one spot and Hamelink rounds out the top eight.
