FMDRS 1-6 - Federal-Mogul Dragster Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Jim Samuel

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - Notes from final, round 2 qualifying in Federal-Mogul Dragster at the Division One Event Six listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Bruce Horner Runs 6.022/234.86, Now #6; Best prior run: 14.363/43.24, Was #12
Right Lane: Billy Gibson Runs 5.739/252.95, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.697/251.49, Was #1

Horner shook the tires but stayed in it enough to move into the field. Gibson went to the right a bit at the start and could not equal his round one E.T.

Left Lane: Karen Benkovich Runs 5.883/242.93, Now #4; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Tim Slagle Runs 6.480/147.68, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.727/243.46, Was #2

Benkovich did not make a run in the first round of qualifying, so her hopes of making the field rode on this run. She shook the tires just a bit but the 28-year old engineer ran well enough to make the final eight. Slagle had to shut down but he was the second fastest qualifier in Round One so his spot in the field looks secure.

Left Lane: Bruce Insinger Runs 5.993/239.78, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.044/233.96, Was #8
Right Lane: Steve Cantrell Runs 5.812/243.15, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.496/151.95, Was #10

Cantrell was DQ'ed in Round One so he needed a good run in order to make the field. Coming off the line, he started to go right but straightened himself out and held on for a run that was good enough to put him solidly in the field. Insinger was on the bubble after Round One and he stayed on the bubble with a so-so run.

Left Lane: Cliff Bozzelli Runs 5.624/252.80, Now #2; Best prior run: 5.964/232.43, Was #7
Right Lane: Rich McPhillips Runs 5.546/253.33, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.518/232.91, Was #11

Excellent runs by both McPhillips and Bozzelli put them into the number one and two qualifying positions. This pairing produced the two quickest times in qualifying so far.

Right Lane: Sheila Tafur Runs 6.484/208.30, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.177/219.36, Was #11

Tafur is in her first season of drag racing and came into this round in the 11th qualifying position. She needed to make one of the best runs of her career to make the field and just did not have it in her. She made a solid run that just was not quick enough to put her into the final eight.

Left Lane: John Headley Runs 6.067/210.08, Now #2; No Prior Run
Right Lane: David DeAngelis Runs 6.039/223.21, Now #1; Best prior run: 9.269/89.10, Was #12

DeAngelis left the line early and then, the drag racing photographer smoked his engine as he entered the traps. Headley's car just did not have enough in it to make it into the field.

Right Lane: Ken Winward Runs 8.126/109.58, Now #10; Best prior run: 5.915/229.35, Was #10

Winward shook the tires hard as he left the starting line and almost crossed the center line at 330 feet. He had to get off the throttle to stay in his lane and will make it into the field on the strength of his first round qualifying run,
