FMDRS 5-5 - Federal-Mogul Dragster Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Rick Green

EARLVILLE, Iowa - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Federal-Mogul Dragster at the Winnebago Division Five Event Five listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Edwin Schmeekle Runs 7.754/119.30, Now #2
Right Lane: Jared Dreher Runs 5.946/228.60, Now #1

Dreher launched and shook the tires, but was able to drive through it. Schmeekle was on a good pass untill he spit the blower belt just past before half track.

Left Lane: David Wells Runs 5.681/251.25, Now #1
Right Lane: Billy Bybee Runs 5.694/248.68, Now #2

Both cars launched hard with the front tires in the air. Bybee drove through the a little tire shake. Good clean pass for Wells.

Left Lane: Bill Reichert Runs 8.363/101.52, Now #6
Right Lane: Jeff Hamelink Runs 5.923/243.96, Now #3

Reichert lost traction and smoked the tires around 200 feet down track. Hamelink had violent tire shake right off the starting line and then started to smoke the tires. He never lifted and the car was side ways and out in the marbles, but he stayed with it. Great job of driving.

Left Lane: Phil Mass Runs 5.689/249.30, Now #3
Right Lane: Bruce Bowler Runs 5.428/252.73, Now #1

Mass with a good clean pass and straight down Broadway, but he look like he was standing still compared to Bowler. Bowler with a new et and speed track record with a great pass.

Left Lane: Chris Ricketts Runs 5.593/242.19, Now #3
Right Lane: Paul Jones Runs 5.554/256.04, Now #2

This was a great looking side-by-side drag race as they are right together until the top end. That was when the big top end speed of Jones kicked in, mph track record.

Left Lane: Lee Callaway Runs 5.892/239.36, Now #8
Right Lane: Marty Thacker Runs 5.845/240.25, Now #7

Callaway was loose, but stay with it to get in the show. Thacker was just a click ahead of him.

Left Lane: Randy Meyer Runs 5.509/244.43, Now #2

Meyer with a lot of tire shake right off the starting line and he pedaled it once and drove it on through for the number two spot. That wraps up session number one with Thacker on the bump and Bowler leading the pack.
