INDY - Pro Stock Truck Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By Michael L. Jex

Yellow Truck On Top

CLERMONT, Ind. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock Truck at the 47th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Dale Eaton Runs 7.522/179.90, Now #7; Best prior run: 8.004/141.49, Was #34
Right Lane: Chip Ippolito Runs 16.652/47.47, Now #33; Best prior run: 7.715/173.05, Was #32

5:22 PM We begin round three of Pro Stock Truck Qualifying with some temporary cloud cover, a single cloud has brought some welcome shade to IRP. Eaton's run was good enough to bump his son Craig down to the bump spot.

Ippolito let out the clutch and nothing good happened, the truck was never on "go", just slow and lazy, the setup just a tad "off".

Left Lane: Samuel Tompkins Runs 9.032/109.39, Now #34; Best prior run: 7.745/175.98, Was #34

Left Lane: Peter Berner No Time, Now #32; Best prior run: 7.704/174.37, Was #32
Right Lane: Michael Graves Runs 7.897/169.25, Now #35; Best prior run: 10.504/88.27, Was #35

Berner's truck is brand new, the team has been working on this deal for over a year. Berner's truck had more problems at the line, Graves improves but still has quite a climb to get into the program.

Left Lane: Jody Schmeisser Runs 7.680/175.84, Now #31; Best prior run: 7.659/175.89, Was #31
Right Lane: Rick Brown Runs 7.643/175.64, Now #29; Best prior run: 7.642/175.14, Was #29

Left Lane: Douglas Harris Runs 7.669/173.94, Now #30; Best prior run: 7.644/175.05, Was #30
Right Lane: Mark Linebarrier Runs 7.656/175.82, Now #28; Best prior run: 7.641/175.41, Was #28

Harris had a good start, including a pretty good 1.074 short time, but both are still well outside the program.

Left Lane: Chris McGaha Runs 7.629/176.65, Now #27; Best prior run: 7.616/177.44, Was #27
Right Lane: Bob Yonke Runs 7.614/176.10, Now #26; Best prior run: 7.614/176.53, Was #26

Did we mention it's hot outside? Not much movement in the ladder thus far.

Left Lane: Scott Tidwell Runs 7.575/178.54, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.579/177.51, Was #22
Right Lane: Rodger Brogdon Runs 7.632/177.14, Now #25; Best prior run: 7.601/177.23, Was #25

Tidwell parlay's a 1.067 short time well enough to move up two spots.

Left Lane: Mark Whisnant Runs 7.550/179.49, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.578/178.99, Was #22
Right Lane: Larry Seay Runs 7.600/176.90, Now #24; Best prior run: 7.597/176.56, Was #24

That was close - Whisnant missed getting into the program by just one thousandth of a second.

Left Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 7.576/178.26, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.576/177.88, Was #22
Right Lane: Jim Kennedy Runs 7.617/177.25, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.588/177.14, Was #23

Jim Kennedy is sponsored by Sand Hill Systems Software Company.

Nope - no help here either.

Left Lane: Vinny Barone Runs 10.671/72.72, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.566/177.84, Was #20
Right Lane: Craig Eaton Runs 7.529/179.54, Now #11; Best prior run: 7.549/178.54, Was #16

Craig's truck is new, with a nice red paint job. Eaton went blazing past Barone when Barone got out of the groove. Barone had to lift when the truck started skating around.

Left Lane: Jeff Naiser Runs 7.562/178.10, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.559/177.56, Was #19
Right Lane: Joe Pigford Runs 7.576/178.40, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.542/178.85, Was #16

Pigford couldn't find three thousandths of a second to move up the ladder - he remains on the bubble.

Left Lane: Lou Ficco Runs 7.587/178.40, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.557/178.28, Was #18
Right Lane: Taylor Lastor Runs 7.509/179.59, Now #4; Best prior run: 7.536/178.19, Was #14

Nice pass for Lastor - the Texas truck hiked up the front end then settled down on a rope all the way to the finish.

Left Lane: John Lingenfelter Runs 7.528/179.78, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.539/178.05, Was #15
Right Lane: Todd Patterson Runs 7.520/179.06, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.531/178.78, Was #14

Left Lane: Scott Perin Runs 7.531/179.42, Now #10; Best prior run: 7.527/178.95, Was #10
Right Lane: Victor Cagnazzi Runs 8.750/113.61, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.530/179.25, Was #15

Cagnazzi's machine made a move towards the centerline, he had to lift early.

Left Lane: Don Smith Runs 7.549/178.21, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.516/178.87, Was #7
Right Lane: Bart Price Runs 7.518/179.92, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.529/179.68, Was #13

Left Lane: Bob Panella Jr Runs 7.480/180.16, Now #1; Best prior run: 7.513/180.26, Was #6
Right Lane: Jeff Gracia Runs 7.557/177.95, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.527/178.87, Was #12

Bob and Jeff must have decided to get a US Nationals photo opportunity - they do side-by-side burnouts clear to the half track mark, a long burnout for these machines.

Panella steps up to the top - 1.051 60-foot time, then a big top end charge. Nice pass.

Left Lane: John Coughlin Runs 7.524/179.47, Now #4; Best prior run: 7.504/179.28, Was #4
Right Lane: Greg Stanfield Runs 7.515/179.64, Now #6; Best prior run: 7.512/179.37, Was #6

Left Lane: Randy Daniels Runs 7.523/179.73, Now #3; Best prior run: 7.492/179.61, Was #3
Right Lane: Mike Coughlin Runs 7.473/180.52, Now #1; Best prior run: 7.487/179.71, Was #2

Jegs! Mike's bright yellow machine run's the best ET and speed of the weekend to grab the top spot away from Bob Panella. 5:50 PM
