MEMPHIS - Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By Larry Sullivan

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 13th annual AutoZone Nationals presented by Pennzoil listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Roger Jenkins Runs 8.807/107.12, Now #32; Best prior run: 10.328/86.92, Was #33

11:20 AM The Pro Stock Trucks just reset their record book with great conditions (if you ignore the chill factor), the temperature in the mid-fifties and the track a cozy 72 degrees. Jenkins shook and chattered the tires, skating around until he called it quits, never getting hooked up cleanly.

Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 6.891/197.65, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.987/195.79, Was #24
Right Lane: Gary Wiggins Runs 8.981/106.14, Now #28; Best prior run: 7.207/170.64, Was #28

Thomas made a great launch, clean and straight, a 1.011 60-foot time and a 6.80s ET - and that ET might not survive through the rest of the session!

Left Lane: Jim Cunningham Runs 8.316/130.14, Now #27; Best prior run: 7.164/196.10, Was #27
Right Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 9.466/97.03, Now #25; Best prior run: 7.037/198.96, Was #25

Both cars had problems getting launched, then Cunningham's new Cougar lost an engine on the top half of the run.

Left Lane: Michael Holton No Time, Now #30; Best prior run: 7.329/185.95, Was #30
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.878/199.40, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.908/198.96, Was #18

Holton's Firebird stopped just in front of the tower and the crew took the hood off, not a good sign. Then they pushed the car back away from the water, a very bad sign. Marnell made a nice single run, clean and straight. Just in case anyone cares, the bump is currently Danny Coffman's 6.899 now, the field all in the eighties.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.844/200.44, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.868/200.08, Was #6
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.907/198.70, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.890/198.99, Was #11

Coughlin had a 1.011 60-foot time - and he was the slowest of the two cars to that point, Alderman with a 1.008. But Alderman lost a few thousandths from yesterday while Coughlin stepped up nicely.

Left Lane: Ed Heck Runs 8.336/114.86, Now #26; Best prior run: 7.056/196.70, Was #26
Right Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 11.635/67.37, Now #33; Best prior run: 9.080/125.60, Was #33

Almost a double disaster here, both cars very loose and almost out of control before their drivers threw in the towel - Koretsky almost into the right hand wall and Heck almost across the centerline.

Left Lane: Joe Lepone Runs 6.952/197.28, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.962/198.50, Was #24
Right Lane: Bruce Allen No Time, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.879/199.40, Was #9

Allen posted a 0.995 60-foot time and the run looked excellent - until the clocks in his lane shut down before he got to the finish line, 5.271 seconds into the run. He will get a rerun if he wants it.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.923/197.39, Now #20; Best prior run: 6.949/194.10, Was #23
Right Lane: Joel Bayless Runs 13.415/70.24, Now #31; Best prior run: 8.087/116.82, Was #31

Bayless launched, started moving around, and shut it down. Gaines improved, but not enough to catch the field.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.893/197.94, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.895/197.86, Was #14
Right Lane: Eric Shelton Runs 9.026/111.69, Now #29; Best prior run: 7.256/189.92, Was #29

Shelton had to make a sharp steering adjustment at 330 feet to keep from hitting the timing reflector. Nice pass by AJ, but only 0.002 better than his previous best.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.830/200.59, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.918/198.90, Was #19
Right Lane: Tony Gillig Runs 6.977/197.80, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.943/197.39, Was #23

Morgan runs career best numbers to take over the pole position, the first time the hemi engine has ever gone 200 mph. Now the bump is Tom Martino's 6.898.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 8.511/113.19, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.906/199.85, Was #19
Right Lane: John Nobile Runs 14.868/54.45, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.942/197.86, Was #22

Kurt was bumped earlier this session and his car returned to the "bad car" form that plagued him earlier this year, the car violently all over the lane until he had to lift to save it. Now KJ's slim title hopes hinge on being able to get into the field in the final session, later this afternoon. If he fails to qualify, Jeg Coughlin Jr. will clinch the championship. Nobile chattered the tires hard and lifted almost immediately.

Left Lane: Danny Coffman Runs 8.662/111.28, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.899/198.23, Was #17
Right Lane: Brad Jeter Runs 12.550/62.04, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.932/199.02, Was #21

More shake and skate, Coffman also failing to get back in.

Left Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.880/200.00, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.898/199.14, Was #16
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.912/200.29, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.903/199.55, Was #18

Both cars chattered the tires on the launch, but Martino was able to recover and still be quick enough to get off the bump spot while Krisher continues to struggle. Now the bump is Robert Patrick's 6.894.

Left Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 6.840/200.23, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.894/199.11, Was #16
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.839/200.56, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.880/199.91, Was #12

Two very impressive runs here, Patrick with a shaking 1.014 60-foot time and Pawuk a 1.008. Now the bump spot is Allen Johnson's 6.893.

Left Lane: Mark Osborne Runs 6.856/298.82, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.872/199.43, Was #10
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.860/200.00, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.845/199.67, Was #8

Ozzie picks up 0.016 seconds and stays right where he was before the run.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.873/200.44, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.846/200.47, Was #9
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.906/199.52, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.845/199.85, Was #7

WJ's car veered right on the launch and he drove through it without lifting - but it had to hurt his ET. Smith's run looked okay, but he lost a few hundredths somewhere.

Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.855/200.53, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.838/200.98, Was #3
Right Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.876/199.02, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.836/198.96, Was #2

No help here, both drivers losing "a couple hun." With one session left, Larry Morgan is on the pole with the third-quickest Pro Stock run ever, 6.830, and Allen Johnson is on the bump spot with a 6.893.
