BAYTOWN, Teaxs -- Tony Schumacher has decided to withdraw from competition this weekend. He made a

Schumacher's qualifying attempt.

tire-smoking qualifying pass of 11.995 seconds. He explained, "I felt great
mentally and when I saw Scelzi run the 4.599 right in front of me I could hear my
heart beat, I was ready. Then when I went up in smoke on the run I did not feel
like I could get my leg to react like it should. I am a professional and I am not
willing to put any of my competitors in danger or myself. I plan on being around
for a long time and contending for many more championships."
Bill Walsh will drive the Army sponsored dragster for the rest of the weekend.
Tony said he will see how his leg feels next week in Dallas before any decisions are
made about competing at the rained-out O'Reilly Fall Nationals.
