HOUSTON-2 - Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By Larry Sullivan

BAYTOWN, Texas - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 4th annual Matco Tools SuperNationals presented by Racing Champions listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Right Lane: Brad Jeter No Time, Now #33; Best prior run: 11.516/107.09, Was #33

11:40 AM Pro Stock opens with a solo pass. The Pro Stock "scooters" stepped up a bit in their just-completed session, so don't be surprised if the field gets a bit shuffled today. The bump as we open the session is Allen Johnson's 6.969.

Left Lane: Eric Shelton Runs 7.357/188.28, Now #32; Best prior run: 7.515/186.64, Was #32
Right Lane: Roger Jenkins Runs 7.060/195.90, Now #30; Best prior run: 7.028/196.16, Was #30

Left Lane: Jamie Yates Runs 7.015/196.30, Now #29; Best prior run: 7.032/195.73, Was #31
Right Lane: Arturo Delgado Runs 7.006/196.73, Now #27; Best prior run: 7.021/196.19, Was #28

Both improve, though not enough to get into the field.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.994/197.16, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.004/196.76, Was #26
Right Lane: Mark Osborne Runs 6.982/197.68, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.001/196.59, Was #24

Left Lane: Carl Beal Runs 7.036/196.53, Now #30; Best prior run: 7.026/197.13, Was #30
Right Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.995/196.62, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.984/196.30, Was #21

Beal's car was wagging its tail all the way down the track.

Left Lane: John Nobile Runs 6.991/197.33, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.008/196.70, Was #28
Right Lane: Bo Nickens Runs 6.986/197.51, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.978/197.65, Was #18

Today is Bo's birthday - 27th, we think. Happy Birthday, "Biscuit." But no birthday present here, Bo losing a hundredth or so.

Left Lane: Tony Gillig Runs 6.976/197.13, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.002/196.99, Was #27
Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 7.007/197.97, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.978/197.71, Was #17

Gillig just misses and Thomas slows from his previous best...

Left Lane: John Geyer Runs 6.960/198.03, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.998/197.39, Was #27
Right Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 6.964/197.68, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.969/197.19, Was #15

Patrick needed to improve to move away from the bump spot, but he didn't improve enough and Geyer bumped AJ, putting Patrick on the bubble.

Left Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 7.298/173.58, Now #27; Best prior run: 6.996/197.62, Was #27
Right Lane: Brad Klein Runs 6.946/197.97, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.961/197.48, Was #15

Klein moved way up in the field with a great run, raising some eyebrows since he's a part-time player, a tough position from which to try to qualify, let alone run in the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.993/198.38, Now #24; Best prior run: 6.990/197.77, Was #24
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.966/198.44, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.957/197.08, Was #14

No improvement for either driver, so Allen will have just one more chance and Morgan stays perilously close to the bump spot.

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion No Time, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.980/198.09, Was #21
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.952/198.26, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.956/196.79, Was #13

Something came off Geoffrion's car on the burnout and he was signaled to shut it off. Nice pass by Alderman to move to the top half of the ladder - for now, anyway.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.968/197.08, Now #17; Best prior run: 6.969/196.44, Was #17
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.966/197.68, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.956/197.28, Was #12

No help here either...

Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.992/195.65, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.956/196.79, Was #13
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.947/198.61, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.955/198.00, Was #11

Marnell fails to improve while Smith moves to the top half of the field, pushing Alderman back below the line once again.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.952/198.50, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.955/198.23, Was #11
Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.980/196.79, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.950/197.16, Was #8

Two good runs, Coughlin moving up 0.003 seconds and two rungs on the ladder.

Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.933/198.35, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.953/198.15, Was #11
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.975/197.13, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.928/197.94, Was #4

From our vantage point it appeared that Pawuk's Firebird got a bit out of the groove, toward the wall, on this one. Meanwhile, Yates moved to the top half of the field, pushing Martino into the bottom half.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.924/199.17, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.931/199.49, Was #5
Right Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.974/197.22, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.909/197.71, Was #2

WJ moves up a rung on a nice pass, while Stevens falls way off his #2 pace.

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.914/199.79, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.914/199.88, Was #3
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.911/199.32, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.905/198.17, Was #1

These two post the two quickest runs of the session to close things out.
