1:52 PM Gilbertson left first and Skuza struck the tires before reaching the 330-foot marker. Skuza gave it up, so Gilbertson's tire smoke on the top end of the run wasn't a factor in the easy win.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   6 Bruce Sarver 5.008 294.88 Q 3 Del Worsham 4.929 306.53

Worsham lost traction at the half-track markers and Sarver pulled away to win by a big margin, his tires trailing just a light haze of smoke from 1,000 feet on. Sarver will have lane choice against Gilbertson in the semifinals.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   1 John Force 4.908 291.63 Q 8 Scotty Cannon 5.011 272.89

Good drag race to half track, then it was all Force, Cannon spinning the tires hard while Force went right down the left side of the groove on a flawless run, setting low ET and top speed of the meet.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   5 Ron Capps 4.951 295.14 Q 4 Tony Pedregon 4.947 299.13

Capps made a nice run to overcome Tony's holeshot, aided by Tony's car dropping cylinders from half track on, the engine dead from 1,000 feet to the finish line. Capps advances to the semifinals, losing lane choice to Force.
