POMONA, Calif. - Results of round 3 eliminations in Funny Car at the 36th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals:

3:39 PM Sarver was dead late off the line, the late afternoon sunshine possibly a factor, but Gilbertson's dropped a cylinder on the left side car headed for the centerline and then the candles went out, allowing Sarver to go by for the win.

THis one was ugly in both lanes, Capps losing traction and then appeared to lose an engine in the right lane, while Force dropped a cylinder on the left side and moved out toward the wall. Force pedaled and muscled it back to the groove, then the engine let go in a flash of flame as he crossed the line. The onboard fire system put the fire out, so the Grinch car will be back for the finals, but Sarver will have lane choice and the Safety Safari is busily cleaning up the mess in the left lane.
