DINWIDDIE, Va. -- When rain forced the cancellation of all qualifying and time trials Saturday, it was determined that Federal-Mogul Dragster, Federal-Mogul Funny Car and Comp Eliminator competitors, all of whom had only one qualifying session on Friday, would have one shot Sunday morning before heading into eliminations. After that final round, Rich McPhillips in Federal-Mogul Dragster, Jay Payne in Federal-Mogul Funny Car, and Frank Aragona in Comp Eliminator all maintained their No. 1 positions from Friday's session. McPhillips of Phoenixville, Pa., made a 5.645-second, 230 mph pass today, bettering his previous effort and Aragona, of Franklin Square, N.Y., did not improve on Friday's effort which had him 0.786 seconds under his index. In Federal-Mogul Funny Car action, no competitor improved enough to take the top spot from Upland, Calif., resident Payne and so he opted no to run, staying with his earlier run of 5.780 seconds at 248.66 mph. He will have a bye run in the first round of eliminations. The sun is beginning to appear and eliminations are continuing at Virginia Motorsports Park.
