READING - Federal-Mogul Dragster Round 2 Eliminations
By Larry Sullivan

MOHNTON, Pa. - Results of round 2 eliminations in Federal-Mogul Dragster at the 16th annual Keystone Nationals:

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   2 Billy Bybee 5.427 262.03 Q 10 Shawn Bowen 5.647 259.66
   (B Horner ) 0.477 5.507 260.56 E1 (C Bozzelli ) 0.474 5.508 261.57
 *****WINNER***** 0.473 5.475 260.51 E2 0.492 5.479 261.07
1:38 PM Under bright blue skies we open the second round with a blower car versus an injected car in pleasantly cool air conditions. It's a good drag race, Bybee with a small holeshot and then almost identical runs for the drastically different cars, Bybee's blower car the winner by a margin of victory = 0.023 seconds (approximately 9 feet).

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   3 Jeff Wilson 5.449 264.55 Q 6 Rich McPhillips 5.520 244.25
   (K Winward ) 0.481 5.443 261.72 E1 (B Reichert ) 0.533 5.500 237.55
 *****WINNER***** 0.474 5.517 243.68 E2 0.521 5.513 237.38
Same deal, same result, Wilson using his holeshot to eke out a margin of victory = 0.043 seconds (approximately 15 feet). But it may have come at an expense, a loud POP from the top end as Wilson shut the engine down. Bybee will have lane choice when those two blower cars meet in the semifinals, guaranteeing that a blown alcohol car will be in the final round.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   4 Douglas Foley 5.449 251.06 Q 5 Tony Lebor 5.483 243.94
   (J Bohr ) 0.594 5.420 257.83 E1 (S Cantrell ) 0.658 5.532 253.85
                  0.548 5.536 252.90 E2 *****WINNER***** 0.506 5.482 253.47
Two injected cars meet here, Jeanie Booz the only surviving blower car on this side of the ladder. Lebor left first and slowly opened up the gap as Foley battled with dropped cylinders. The margin of victory = 0.096 seconds (approximately 36 feet).

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   8 Jeanie Booz 5.572 255.53 Q 1 Dave Hirata 5.372 270.86
   (M Kosky ) 0.568 5.599 252.43 E1 (D DeAngelis ) 0.451 5.638 266.64
 *****WINNER***** 0.435 5.529 257.19 E2 0.471 5.645 250.00
Hirata needed a speed of 268.16 mph or better to back up his qualifying speed of 270.86 as a national record. But on this run he would have settled for eight cylinders firing, his engine dropping a cylinder immediately and never picking it back up. Booz advances on a great light and a clean run, losing lane choice to Lebor in the semifinals.
