READING - Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By Larry Sullivan

MOHNTON, Pa. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 16th annual Keystone Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 6.898/197.48, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.961/198.61, Was #20

11:45 AM The bump as we open this session is John Nobile's 6.947. You can throw that away because the field will shuffle dramatically this session - it's cool (mid-sixties) and partly cloudy, the track and air very good. The bikes and Comp Eliminator cars stepped way up earlier this morning.

Example - Thomas, from 20th to fourth to join WJ in the eighties. They will have plenty of company before long.

Left Lane: Don Beverley Runs 6.964/196.56, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.033/195.62, Was #27
Right Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.878/198.50, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.928/197.86, Was #9

Beverley's car did a dance on the launch and that hurt his ET. Stevens nailed it, a nice run. Now there are six in the eighties.

Left Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 7.098/195.73, Now #30; Best prior run: 7.155/194.07, Was #31
Right Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 6.948/198.85, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.044/197.36, Was #28

Sounded like Haas went through the clutch, the RPMs way up and steady.

Left Lane: Bill Shorts Runs 8.217/146.57, Now #33; Best prior run: 8.955/153.26, Was #33
Right Lane: Gary Wiggins Runs 11.649/57.27, Now #32; Best prior run: 7.247/189.58, Was #32

Shorts spun the tires on the launch, then almost took out the finish line reflectors. Wiggins launched, shook, and gave it up. Even with the top-end evasive maneuver, that's a career-best run for Shorts.

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.938/198.44, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.976/197.86, Was #25
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.886/199.23, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.950/198.09, Was #20

The bump is now Geoffrion's 6.938 - won't last long. Troy goes way up near the top of the ladder - for now.

Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.936/198.20, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.979/196.67, Was #26
Right Lane: David Strouse Jr. Runs 7.034/196.27, Now #29; Best prior run: 7.116/194.30, Was #31

Allen had problems on both his earlier runs and gets in, but barely and may get bumped before long. Now the bump time is Kurt Johnson's 6.937.

Left Lane: Bob Benza Runs 6.948/197.97, Now #22; Best prior run: 6.961/197.31, Was #24
Right Lane: Ed Heck Runs 6.997/197.74, Now #29; Best prior run: 7.076/196.24, Was #30

KJ dodges the bullet here, but there are plenty more lined up in the lanes.

Left Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 14.679/57.53, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.948/197.68, Was #23

Hammonds' car spun the tires and headed for the wall, so he shut it down.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.914/197.91, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.944/197.13, Was #19
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.922/199.97, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.983/196.33, Was #27

AJ's Dodge wedge engine won't be legal next year, no word yet what his team plans to do. For now, however, it's still good enough to outrun most of the factory Dodge hemi engines. Now the bump is Bruce Allen's 6.936, KJ and V. Gaines bumped by these two.

Left Lane: Mark Osborne Runs 6.919/199.17, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.943/198.38, Was #20
Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.947/198.85, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.973/197.94, Was #27

Ozzie's car was moving around a lot, but it doesn't appear to have hurt his ET much. That bumps Allen. Now it's Brad Jeter on the bubble, at 6.934.

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.926/198.52, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.936/197.51, Was #18
Right Lane: Kenny Koretsky Runs 6.917/197.88, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.952/196.85, Was #26

Both get back in the field, bumping Jeter and Jim Yates. Now it's Robert Patrick who's sweating on the bump spot at 6.929.

Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.872/199.85, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.933/198.85, Was #17
Right Lane: John Nobile Runs 6.952/198.23, Now #23; Best prior run: 6.947/197.31, Was #23

Two recent bumpees, Yates going to the top of the stack, bumping Patrick, while Nobile loses ground early in the run and comes up short. Now it's V. Gaines, back on the bubble at 6.926.

Left Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 6.911/199.61, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.929/198.50, Was #17
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.884/200.44, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.937/199.17, Was #20

Two more recent bumpees, trying to become bumpers. They bot succeed, KJ joining his dad in the 200 mph column. That bumps Gaines and Morgan, putting Mark Osborne on the bubble at 6.919.

Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.908/199.32, Now #11; Best prior run: 6.906/198.76, Was #11
Right Lane: Brad Jeter Runs 6.960/192.66, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.934/196.67, Was #19

Marnell is consistent and Jeter runs into problems on the top end of his run, the speed way down.

Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.894/199.17, Now #8; Best prior run: 6.899/198.55, Was #9
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.900/199.85, Now #10; Best prior run: 6.916/198.32, Was #14

Everybody yet to run is already in the field, so it's all about position on the ladder now. Pawuk moves to the top half of the ladder, barely, and "Tricky Rickie" moves up several rungs.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.867/200.95, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.892/198.67, Was #7
Right Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.875/200.08, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.902/198.50, Was #11

Two great runs and two more in the 200 mph column. Now the top ten are in the eighties.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.885/201.28, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.888/200.23, Was #8
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.862/199.94, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.874/198.55, Was #3

WJ made a good run, but Alderman made a great run, a 1.008 60-foot time and a top-end run to match, taking back the #1 spot with a vengeance.
