EARLVILLE, Iowa -- McLean, Texas, resident Billy Bybee came to Tri-State Raceway to hold off the competition for the Federal-Mogul Dragster division title. Bybee has claimed points from the maximum possible number of races but needed to keep Denver's Bruce Bowler from earning enough points to pass Bybee. Bybee had his work cut out for him as Bowler had a bye into the final round of eliminations. Bybee dispensed with No. 1 qualifier David Wells, of LeMars, Iowa in the semi-final round and then beat Bowler to clinch the championship. Bybee made a 5.631-second, 254.38 mph pass to Bowler's 5.677-second, 249.51 mph effort. In Federal-Mogul Funny Car action, Randy Fleming, Independence, Mo., successfully defended his event title from 1999. In the finals, he beat Red Wing, Minn., resident Sam Blue on a hole-shot with a .479-second reaction time to Blue's .527-second move. At the finish line, Fleming's run was 5.976 seconds at 246.50 mph and Blue's was 5.941 seconds at 245.96 mph. Winners in other categories include Jerry Arnold, Kalamazoo, Mich., in Competition; Randall Klein, Lincoln, Neb., in Super Stock; Kevin Helms, Mineola, Texas, in Stock; Bob Fuller, Rogers, Ark., in Super Comp; Alan Bush, Erie, Ill., in Super Gas; and Frank Nichols, Grand Island, Neb., in Super Street.
