MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Lee Callaway stayed a top of the Federal-Mogul Dragster field giving him a bye run in the first round of eliminations early Saturday evening. Callaway's 5.802 second bye run will give him lane choice against Don Fiorelli who took out Artie Allen in his first round match up.

"The car slowed down from last night's qualifying," said Callaway of his first round pass. "The air's just not as good, it was much cooler last night. The car's running great though, we should pick back up for the next round.

Troy Buff will meet up with Marty Thacker in the other semi-final match scheduled for later this evening.

In the Federal-Mogul Funny Car competition, it was number one qualifier Chuck Cheeseman defeating New Market, Alabama's Jerry Freeman in round one with a pass of 6.006 at 215.05 mph to Freeman's 6.341, 218.02. South Central Division's Todd Simpson and Tate Branch also recorded first round wins and will meet up in the semi-finals for the right to meet Cheeseman in the final round. Cheeseman will have a bye into the finals.

Semi-final and final rounds of dragster and funny car are scheduled for later this evening while eliminations for all other classes will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday morning.
