ENGLISHTOWN - Top Fuel Time Trials Notes, Session #2
By Rick Green

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - Notes from final, round 2 time trials in Top Fuel at the 31st Matco Tools Spring SuperNationals presented by Racing Champions listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Rit Pustari Runs 4.854/307.09, Now #6; No Prior Run

What a pass for his career best et and speed. He just showed Grubnic he is ready to play tomorrow.

Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.675/318.47, Now #3; Best prior run: 11.044/84.88, Was #9
Right Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 10.165/85.60, Now #10; No Prior Run

The header flames go out on Herbert's ride as soon as they get full. Cory was able to keep the candles lit and the Goodyears stuck for the third best pass of time trials.

Left Lane: Don Lampus Runs 10.656/82.81, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.819/295.34, Was #6
Right Lane: David Grubnic Runs 11.608/74.21, Now #11; Best prior run: 11.401/75.57, Was #11

Both cars go up in smoke about 100 feet out and abort the runs.

Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 10.209/76.96, Now #6; Best prior run: 4.696/311.56, Was #5
Right Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 4.672/314.75, Now #3; Best prior run: 10.022/104.95, Was #9

Bernstein threw a blower belt on his earlier run and needs this run to get a baseline for the race tomorrow. He keeps everything together and makes a decent pass. Dixon goes up in smoke about 100 feet out.

Left Lane: Joe Amato Runs 4.631/312.13, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.691/315.42, Was #5
Right Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.591/317.27, Now #1; Best prior run: 5.188/175.46, Was #9

This was a drag race here even to the 330-foot mark and then it is all Kalitta. If this were to count for anything it is Doug's quickest and fastest pass of the season.

Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 4.612/323.27, Now #2; Best prior run: 4.657/322.65, Was #4
Right Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 6.797/116.92, Now #3; Best prior run: 4.630/315.93, Was #2

They left together and were glued together until Scelzi started to lose traction and lifted. Schumacher with his fastest pass of the season to finish off time trials.
