ENGLISHTOWN - Funny Car Time Trial Notes, Session #1
By Rick Green

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - Notes from time trial round 1 in Funny Car at the 31st Matco Tools Spring SuperNationals presented by Racing Champions listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Terry Haddock Runs 6.319/152.55, Now #2
Right Lane: Cristen Powell Runs 5.477/194.55, Now #1

Cristen qualified with the Helen Hofmann team in May, but since then they have parted ways. She is now driving for Bazemore. This has caused some controversy to say the least. Cristen started trailing smoke around 1000 feet. Haddock labored through the quarter-mile.

Left Lane: Todd Paton Runs 5.187/286.86, Now #1
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 10.020/88.48, Now #4

Densham overpowered the track around the 330-foot mark. Patton in his new family owned car with a great looking pass. Clean and straight all the way down the 1320.

Left Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 12.796/76.70, Now #6
Right Lane: Al Hofmann Runs 5.531/184.50, Now #3

Pedregon was up in smoke as soon as he hit the throttle. Hofmann clicked it early, but this must of been planned. I did not see any problems with his run. As I just completed writing this the Safety Safari rolled, so apparently the engine went away and we have oil on the track.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 6.134/137.36, Now #4
Right Lane: Scotty Cannon Runs 14.473/70.27, Now #8

Cannon was up in smoke as soon as he hit the throttle while Worsham made it to half track before he lost traction.

Left Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 5.942/160.58, Now #5
Right Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 4.847/314.24, Now #1

Skuza with a wisp of smoke off the Goodyears around half track and that was the end of his run. Bazemore launched hard, kept the Goodyears glued to the track and the candles lit all the way though the quarter-mile. This was almost two tenths of a second quicker than his qualified time from May.

Left Lane: Jim Epler Runs 9.437/86.67, Now #9
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 5.047/303.23, Now #2

Epler started to loose traction around 150 feet and clicked it off. Capps with a clean pass that he will be able to collect data off of for tomorrow's eliminations.

Left Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 9.330/85.04, Now #10
Right Lane: John Force Runs 4.939/310.77, Now #2

Number one and two in points and Force rocketed down the quarter mile for the second best time today. Toliver lost traction at about the same spot that teammate Epler did. That is it for Funny Car.
