STOW, Ohio -- "We are pleased to announce that Mark Pawuk will be joining the Matco Tools team in 2000," reported Eric Mullenmeister, Matco's Vice President of Sales, late this afternoon. "We've had our eye on Mark and his Summit Racing Pro Stock Pontiacs for the last year or so, and consider him an ideal addition to our motorsports efforts. "As an Ohio business owner and success away from the racing arena, Mark epitomizes the kind of independent, forward-looking executive/racer that, in many respects, is a reflection of our independent sales network." Pawuk is a former National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) class record holder and 13-time national event finalist. He finished eighth in the 1999 final NHRA Winston series standings following a strong second half to the season that saw his car qualifying in the top half the fields in what many consider to be the toughest category in drag racing. The coming season will be Pawuk's eighth with major sponsor Summit Racing Equipment, the Akron-based mail order giant that holds the presenting title rights to the Pontiac Excitement Nationals held in Columbus in June. Major associate backing for Pawuk's operation will continue to come from Pontiac Motor Division as well as Cleveland-based Mr. Heater Corporation. Pawuk joins a well-known group of racers, including Alan Johnson's two-car fuel-racing team, headed by two-time NHRA Winston Top Fuel champion Gary Scelzi and joined in 2000 by the the new E-moola.com Funny Car driven by Bruce Sarver; Chuck Etchells' Kendall Matco Tools Funny Car piloted by Whit Bazemore; and Matco Tools' principal Funny Car driver, Dean Skuza, in representing Matco Tools on the NHRA Winston series circuit.
"I'm honored to have been asked to become a member of the Matco Tools
team," Pawuk said. "Our team's goal remains winning the NHRA Winston
championship, but in addition to that we're going to do our best to run
hard at three races next season ? The Matco Tools Spring Supernationals
at Englishtown, New Jersey in May, the Pontiac Excitement Nationals
presented by Summit Racing at Columbus, Ohio in June, and the Matco
Tools Supernationals in Houston in October. If we can come home with
wins at those three races, well, I won't say I'll be satisfied no matter
what else happens, but I'll admit that I'll be a VERY happy camper!"
