POMONA, Calif. -- Only one NHRA Winston Championship is yet to be decided, the Pro Stock Motorcycle title race between archrivals Angelle Seeling and Matt Hines. At this point, Seeling leads Hines by a mere 12 points meaning that Hines need to advance one round more than Seeling. Since the racers are on opposite sides of the eliminations ladder, the battle for the season championship may well go down to the final round here today, making history in the category. In all the remaining categories, the season titles are locked up. Tony Schumacher took the Top Fuel championship, in a year when he won just one national event. John Force nabbed his ninth Funny Car title, while Warren Johnson took home his fifth championship in Pro Stock. Rick Santos locked up the Federal-Mogul Dragster series championship long ago, while Frank Manzo took Federal-Mogul Funny Car honors in a down-to-the-wire battle with Tony Bartone. In the remaining sportsman categories, Andy Manna earned the Competition Eliminator championship, Jimmy DeFrank won Super Stock, Don Little took Stock, Frank Kohutek wrapped Super Comp, and Sheldon Gecker came out of nowhere to win the Super Gas title at '99's final FMDRS event. These drivers will be presented their trophies and bonus checks at the NHRA Winston Awards Ceremony this coming Tuesday night at the nearby Cerritos Center for Performing Arts. Also presented will be the Winston Rookie of the Year award and the Auto Club of Southern California Road to the Future award. The candidates for the ROY award include Andrew Cowin, Allen Hartley, Bob Gilbertson, Scotty Cannon, and John Coughlin, while the Road to the Future candidates include Cory Lee, Richie Stevens, and Antron Brown.
Look for the final point standings in all categories later in the week, along
with a complete report from the Awards Ceremony. Also, check out the Summit
Scoop for a full behind-the-scenes update, coming later today.
