By Larry Sullivan

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 35th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.992/198.15, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.004/197.97, Was #23
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.978/197.77, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.939/198.55, Was #7

11:14 AM The next-to-last qualifying session of the century opens with Greg Anderson on the bubble at 6.980. Morgan comes up just short of the number and Yates slows from his best effort.

Left Lane: Randy Jones Runs 6.999/196.33, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.001/196.99, Was #23
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.996/197.39, Now #15; Best prior run: 6.975/198.41, Was #15

Two more "almost qualified" runs, Jones still outside the field, Edwards still barely inside.

Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.934/197.62, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.928/198.00, Was #4
Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 6.993/197.16, Now #21; Best prior run: 6.993/196.82, Was #21

Thomas is consistent, but a few clock ticks too slow once again.

Left Lane: Arturo Delgado Runs 7.001/197.54, Now #14; Best prior run: 6.973/197.91, Was #14
Right Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 7.046/196.24, Now #26; Best prior run: 7.013/196.27, Was #26

No help here either...conditions aren't quite as good as yesterday's session, so it's going to take an exceptional effort to get into the field today.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 6.912/199.32, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.940/199.55, Was #8
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.970/198.41, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.967/198.41, Was #13

Wow! Jeg moves way up the ladder despite tire shake on the launch.

Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.965/199.29, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.951/198.61, Was #9

KJ's car was all over the lane on the launch but he delivers a pretty good run anyway. WJ is slower than Jeg's quick lap of the session.

Left Lane: Larry Nance Runs 6.999/196.70, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.010/196.53, Was #25
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.956/198.61, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.923/198.88, Was #3

Same story as most runs this session, though Nance did improve and get into the sixes.

Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 6.977/198.64, Now #16; Best prior run: 6.980/198.41, Was #16

Anderson picks it up a few thousandths, but not enough to get off the bump spot. Pawuk's car made a hard move to the right on the launch.

Left Lane: Mike Trumble Runs 6.997/197.91, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.964/198.67, Was #11
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 6.945/199.37, Now #9; Best prior run: 6.997/198.03, Was #22

Gaines gets his problems sorted out and bumps Anderson on an impressive pass. That puts Mike Edwards on the bubble at 6.975.

Left Lane: Don Beverley Runs 7.021/196.19, Now #19; Best prior run: 6.985/196.85, Was #19
Right Lane: Tony Gillig Runs 6.966/198.32, Now #13; Best prior run: 6.966/198.15, Was #13

Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 7.282/156.84, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.933/199.40, Was #6

AJ improves, but not enough to move off the 11th spot.

Left Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 6.981/197.13, Now #18; Best prior run: 6.993/197.45, Was #21
Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 7.026/196.56, Now #25; Best prior run: 7.010/196.62, Was #25

Patrick improves, but not quite enough...

Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.958/197.80, Now #12; Best prior run: 6.982/197.16, Was #19
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 7.079/195.51, Now #28; Best prior run: 7.049/196.96, Was #28

Alderman steps up and bumps Edwards, putting Arturo Delgado on the bubble at 6.973.

Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.962/198.79, Now #7; Best prior run: 6.937/198.79, Was #7

Allen closed the session with a very shaky run, the rear end of the car dancing left and right on the launch.
