POMONA - Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #1
By Larry Sullivan

Not Quite All Sixes

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 35th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Mike Trumble Runs 6.977/198.47, Now #1
Right Lane: Greg Anderson Runs 13.361/65.75, Now #2

2:34 PM Good pass left lane,. shake right lane. Based on the Pro Stock Truck and Motorcycle sessions, the track record may fall but we're a long way from the mineshaft we saw in Houston two weeks ago.

Left Lane: Don Beverley Runs 7.027/196.62, Now #2
Right Lane: Jerry Eckman Runs 7.185/196.42, Now #3

Neither of these runs is likely to make the cut here...

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 6.959/197.83, Now #1
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 7.190/197.33, Now #5

The right lane seems to be giving the drivers problems getting the cars off the launch pad.

Left Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 6.993/197.45, Now #3
Right Lane: Tony Gillig Runs 7.035/197.65, Now #5

Same story here, Gillig's car swimming its way up the right lane.

Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.982/197.16, Now #4
Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.960/199.11, Now #2

Martino tames the right lane with a pretty run, right down the groove. Good pass for the Dodge too, not quite as quick as the Firebird.

Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.937/198.79, Now #1
Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 7.041/196.87, Now #9

Allen's recent horsepower gain appears to be with him again this weekend, a very quick pace for the opening session.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.004/197.97, Now #7
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 7.049/196.96, Now #11

Left Lane: Randy Jones Runs 7.001/196.99, Now #8
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.959/198.03, Now #2

Yates also tames the right lane with the quickest run on that side so far today.

Left Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 6.928/198.00, Now #1
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.975/198.41, Now #6

Stevens moves the bar up a bit with this run, both cars right down the groove.

Left Lane: Arturo Delgado Runs 6.973/197.91, Now #6
Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 8.893/107.41, Now #19

Thomas slowed around the 2-3 shift point. Delgado made a nice run.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 18.469/73.53, Now #22
Right Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 7.086/194.30, Now #17

Coughlin went about ten feet and then began coasting, something breaking.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.908/201.07, Now #1
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.967/198.41, Now #7

WJ's car made a hard left turn on the launch - and he still eclipsed the field by a bunch.

Left Lane: Larry Nance Runs 7.010/196.53, Now #16
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.962/199.49, Now #7

KJ is running a Ness chassis last used in 1998 in an attempt to get away from the handling problems he's experienced lately. Looked okay here, a small left turn on the launch.

Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.924/198.70, Now #2
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.947/198.64, Now #5

Two nice runs to close the round, Pawuk's car darting around the lane for the first half of the run without any apparent effect on his ET.

That closes a quick opening session with WJ on the pole at 6.908 and Randy Jones on the bubble with the only seven-second ET in the sixteen-car field at 7.001.
