By Larry Sullivan

Big Upset!

ENNIS, Texas - Results of round 2 eliminations in Pro Stock Truck at the 14th annual O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec:

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   3 Brad Jeter 7.584 178.39 Q 6 Greg Stanfield 7.591 177.13
   (B Self ) 0.425 7.544 178.25 E1 (L Perkins ) 0.475 7.539 177.54
 *****WINNER***** 0.463 7.550 178.42 E2 0.443 7.578 177.13
5:02 PM A close one here for Jeter, whose championship hopes remain alive by a margin of victory = 0.008 seconds (approximately 2 feet) after ceding the starting line to Stanfield.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   4 Vinny Barone 7.588 177.09 Q 5 Mike Coughlin 7.591 177.37
   (C Eaton ) 0.444 7.537 177.54 E1 (L Kopp ) 0.416 7.539 177.79
 *****WINNER***** 0.471 7.602 177.58 E2 No Time
Coughlin nailed Vinny to the tree, but the Jeg's truck broke and coasted through the course, stopping a couple hundred feet past the finish line. The Safety Safari rolls to clean up some oil between the 330-foot and half-track markers, plus a few drips here and there on the rest of the right lane.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   2 Randy Daniels 7.575 178.14 Q 7 Bob Panella Jr 7.594 177.02
   (S Johns ) 0.417 7.532 178.53 E1 (M Whisnant ) 0.428 7.543 177.83
                  0.497 7.540 179.14 E2 *****WINNER***** 0.440 7.578 177.13
Panella is the second title hopeful in this round and held a 92 point lead over Mark Osborne coming into this race. He pulls off the holeshot win here, leaving Daniels at the starting line and then holding him off on the other end for a margin of victory = 0.019 seconds (approximately 5 feet). Whew! However, he loses lane choice to Jeter in the semifinals tomorrow, a matchup that could decide the 1999 championship.

 Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed-Rd-Qua-Driver(Opp'nt)-RT-----ET---Speed
   1 Mark Osborne 7.574 177.86 Q 9 Tim Freeman 7.609 177.16
   (S Tidwell ) 0.449 7.524 178.32 E1 (J Coughlin ) 0.434 7.585 177.13
                  0.612 7.563 178.35 E2 *****WINNER***** 0.476 7.628 176.26
That effectively reduces the title chase to a contest between Panella and Jeter, Osborne very late at the start and losing to a much slower Freeman. Freeman loses lane choice to Barone in the semifinals.
