MILLINGTON, Tenn. - 10/9/99 8:50 AM CDT - Memphis Motorsports Park awoke Saturday to the sound of the jet drier making laps on the dragstrip, but that sound was soon replaced by the gentle pitter-patter of raindrops.

The weather map for today looks more promising than it did last night and there's a fairly large "window" in the green blob to the southwest of Memphis. Forecasts for Sunday are even more promising, "partly cloudy" with no mention of rain.

What the situation boils down to is this: If the Professional categories can get in at least one qualifying session today (three are scheduled), the race will be completed this weekend. However, if the pattern of light rain with only short periods of re spite continues today, the event will probably be postponed to next weekend.

Right now we're in the leading edge of the window and track drying has begun once again. Judging by past attempts, it will be at least two hours before the first cars could go down the track, so the earliest we could get going would be around 11:00 AM.
