Cool, Wet Weather Moves into the Heartland
By Ed Dykes

Tomorrow Doesn't Look Any Better

TOPEKA, Kan. -- If last night's cool, windy weather threw the crew chiefs for a loop (only seven of 20 Top Fuelers got down the track), they're really going to be scratching their collective heads today. A cold front moved through the area last night, and this morning brought scattered showers and even cooler temps to the area.

The current temp at the track is 40 degrees, and the forecast today is for a high in the mid-fifties, but I can tell you that it feels like thirty out there right now. The few spectators that are out milling around are either bundled in their heaviest coats or wrapped in blankets, and the racers are working to keep warm as they prepare their cars for the day's action.

So far, there hasn't been a any action on the race track except for the laps the jet track dryer have been making since the early hours. The sportsman racers are in the lanes, awaiting their turn at the track, except for the Comp Eliminator machines, who have been notified that their last qualifying session yesterday will be their final one for the weekend.

Today's revised schedule calls for round one eliminations in Stock Eliminator, followed by round two Super Street, then straight into round one of the Pro Stock Trucks then right into the day's scheduled pro category qualifying. The sportsman classes that were scheduled to run this morning will be shuffled in later in the day, weather and conditions permitting.

The sounds of the first Stock Eliminator machines firing up have penetrated the Media Center, so we're ready to get started here at Heartland Park Topeka. Stay tuned as your intrepid southern reporter weathers these near-blizzard conditions to bring you all the action.
