2:11 PM WJ survived a scare in the first round with a holeshot win over sixteenth qualifier Robert Patrick, while Allen Johnson used a holeshot to defeat Jim Yates. WJ lost lane choice to Allen and that may have been a factor here, WJ's car getting out of shape at mid-track, forcing "the Professor" to slow to regain control.

Marnell pulls the trigger too early and that cost him because Troy also had problems at half track, his car fishtailing several times. Troy wins, but loses lane choice to Allen Johnson in the semifinals.

Schmidt was behind when he reached the area where the previous three cars encountered problems and he backed off, Kurt obviously on a strong, winning run. That gives Kurt lane choice against Jeg Coughlin in the semifinals.
