CHANDLER - Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #3
By Larry Sullivan

Field Gets Faster, Tighter

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 15th annual NHRA Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

11:31 AM This session opens with V. Gaines on the bubble at 7.037 seconds. This will be the quicker session of the two today, so if there is any shuffling of the field, look for it this morning.

Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.979/196.85, Now #3; Best prior run: 7.015/197.25, Was #11
Right Lane: John Nobile Runs 6.995/197.51, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.007/196.87, Was #6

Big improvements for both these cars - if this keeps up there will be wholesale shuffling.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.040/195.42, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.034/196.07, Was #15
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 7.122/178.80, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.995/197.65, Was #6

Morgan's Dodge is still smoking heavily during the run.

Left Lane: Larry Nance Runs 7.045/196.33, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.060/196.47, Was #22
Right Lane: Ray Franks Runs 7.144/193.63, Now #31; Best prior run: 7.218/193.35, Was #31

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.982/197.54, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.985/197.45, Was #4
Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 6.990/197.80, Now #6; Best prior run: 7.010/196.99, Was #9

Nice consistency by Troy, just 0.003 off his best yesterday. Big improvement for Schmidt, into the sixes.

Left Lane: Shawn Collins Runs 7.028/196.79, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.025/196.47, Was #12
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 7.035/197.45, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.007/196.39, Was #9

Collins' car was moving around in the lane.

Left Lane: Harry Scribner Runs 7.000/196.22, Now #10; Best prior run: 7.048/195.34, Was #20
Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 6.956/197.97, Now #2; Best prior run: 7.012/197.25, Was #10

Scribner's car was all over the shutdown lane, but he kept it off the walls. The car started trailing tire smoke at 330 feet, looked like tire smoke from a tire rub. Thomas got the run he's been looking for all weekend, a nice pass to make it nine cars in the sixes.

Left Lane: Dester Cambron Runs 7.057/196.73, Now #23; Best prior run: 7.082/195.79, Was #26
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.920/199.64, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.935/199.11, Was #1

Okay, those numbers are now the track ET and speed records for Pro Stock. He got the other hundredth he said was left yesterday.

Left Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 7.017/197.74, Now #13; Best prior run: 7.028/197.10, Was #15
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 7.067/196.19, Now #26; Best prior run: 11.211/79.50, Was #35

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 7.065/194.91, Now #25; Best prior run: 7.064/195.25, Was #25
Right Lane: Mike Trumble Runs 6.999/197.10, Now #10; Best prior run: 7.040/196.99, Was #18

Now it's ten cars in the sixes. That bumps Morgan and puts Rickie Smith on the bubble at 7.027. The Dodge left a few oil dribbles on the first 200 feet of the lane, so the Safety Safari had a "GI party" before the next pair.

Left Lane: Danny Coffman 7.092/194.91, Now #29; Best prior run: 7.107/195.73, Was #30
Right Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 7.018/196.67, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.061/195.76, Was #24

Left Lane: Arturo Delgado 7.043/196.64, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.981/132.13, Was #34
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 7.000/197.22, Now #11; Best prior run: 7.027/196.07, Was #17

That puts Richie Stevens on the bubble at 7.018.

Left Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 7.431/191.35, Now #28; Best prior run: 7.082/195.68, Was #28
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 7.198/192.17, Now #27; Best prior run: 7.071/194.91, Was #27

Lots of tire spin for Blakeney.

Left Lane: Tony Gillig Runs 11.307/76.70, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.050/195.53, Was #22
Right Lane: Brad Klein Runs 7.218/193.35, Now #31; Best prior run: 7.123/194.07, Was #31

Gillig went into severe tire shake at the 1-2 shift.

Left Lane: Mike Bell Runs 7.110/195.11, Now #29; Best prior run: 7.104/194.66, Was #29
Right Lane: Jim Basko Runs 7.152/193.07, Now #33; Best prior run: 7.265/190.48, Was #33

Bell also spun the tires hard on the launch.

Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 7.003/195.51, Now #13; Best prior run: 7.045/195.22, Was #21
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 7.100/196.36, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.037/195.99, Was #19

Allen gets the new car into the field with a clean run, straight and smooth. Gaines fails to get back into the field.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 7.042/196.07, Now #15; Best prior run: 7.013/197.05, Was #15
Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 7.024/196.67, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.054/196.10, Was #23

The bump is now Robert Patrick's 7.017

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 15.097/55.36, Now #6; Best prior run: 6.988/197.80, Was #6
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.934/198.79, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.969/197.80, Was #3

Instant tire shake forced Jeg to shut it off. No problems in the right lane, however, a nice run to move around Thomas in the order.

Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 8.813/107.32, Now #35; Best prior run: 9.014/102.68, Was #35

"Cowboy" drove through the clutch and abandoned the run. That's it, with WJ on the pole, ten cars in the sixes, and Patrick on the bubble at 7.017.
