CHANDLER - Pro Stock Qualifying Notes, Session #2
By Larry Sullivan

Shake, Rattle, and Roll

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 15th annual NHRA Checker Schuck's Kragen Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Mike Bell Runs 7.104/194.66, Now #26; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 7.054/196.10, Now #19; Best prior run: 7.092/195.25, Was #25

03:29 PM The bump spot is Bruce Allen's 7.045

Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 7.067/194.60, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.045/195.22, Was #16
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.989/197.88, Now #2; Best prior run: 6.969/197.80, Was #2

Allen's new '99 Firebird doesn't improve - the first round here was the first lap on that new car.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 7.056/196.36, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.013/197.05, Was #8
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 12.472/69.07, Now #30; Best prior run: 9.014/102.68, Was #30

Pawuk launched, shifted to second gear, and shook very hard.

Left Lane: Jeg Coughlin Runs 13.812/89.64, Now #4; Best prior run: 6.988/197.80, Was #4
Right Lane: John Nobile Runs 7.040/0.00, Now #6; Best prior run: 7.007/196.87, Was #6

The monitor screen cleared before I could record Nobile's speed. Jeg had shake problems at 200 feet.

Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 7.084/188.99, Now #10; Best prior run: 7.015/197.25, Was #10
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 7.013/197.31, Now #5; Best prior run: 6.995/197.65, Was #5

Johnson shows that his first run was no fluke, falling off less than 0.02 seconds in the heat. Marnell's car did a dance at half track.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.112/194.60, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.034/196.07, Was #14
Right Lane: Ray Franks Runs 7.218/193.35, Now #28; No Prior Run

Morgan's car trailed some unhealthy-looking smoke all the way down the track.

Left Lane: Larry Nance Runs 7.117/194.88, Now #22; Best prior run: 7.060/196.47, Was #21
Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 7.010/196.99, Now #8; Best prior run: 7.845/139.36, Was #29

Schmidt gets an ET to go with that tough 60' time and bumps Allen. That puts V. Gaines on the bubble at 7.037.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 10.304/88.37, Now #3; Best prior run: 6.985/197.45, Was #3
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 7.034/196.90, Now #7; Best prior run: 7.007/196.39, Was #7

Troy's car almost duplicated Jeg's run, the car going out 200 feet and then shaking hard.

Left Lane: Shawn Collins Runs 7.094/195.56, Now #12; Best prior run: 7.025/196.47, Was #12
Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 7.012/197.25, Now #9; Best prior run: 7.014/196.59, Was #10

Double-vision here, Collins and Thomas both in Pennzoil livery for this "Presented by Pennzoil" event.

Left Lane: Harry Scribner Runs 7.072/194.55, Now #18; Best prior run: 7.048/195.34, Was #18
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 11.963/83.76, Now #1; Best prior run: 6.935/199.11, Was #1

WH proves he's human, the car shaking hard about 200 feet out, the danger zone here at Firebird.

Left Lane: Dester Cambron Runs 9.085/105.10, Now #25; Best prior run: 7.082/195.79, Was #25
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 13.396/64.10, Now #33; Best prior run: 11.211/79.50, Was #33

Tire shake in both lanes here, Edwards as soon as he shifted into second gear, and Cambron about 300 feet out.

Left Lane: Robert Patrick Runs 7.070/196.16, Now #14; Best prior run: 7.028/197.10, Was #14
Right Lane: Mike Trumble Runs 7.040/196.99, Now #17; Best prior run: 7.056/196.04, Was #21

Trumble misses the cut by 0.003 seconds.

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 7.143/193.74, Now #24; Best prior run: 7.064/195.25, Was #23
Right Lane: Richie Stevens Runs 7.061/195.76, Now #23; No Prior Run

Left Lane: Danny Coffman Runs 7.107/195.73, Now #29; No Prior Run
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 7.049/193.96, Now #13; Best prior run: 7.027/196.07, Was #13

Left Lane: Arturo Delgado Runs 7.981/132.13, Now #32; Best prior run: 8.531/116.21, Was #32
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 7.106/195.08, Now #25; Best prior run: 7.071/194.91, Was #25

Delgado's car was very loose from 300 feet to well past half-track.

Left Lane: Hurley Blakeney Runs 7.109/194.35, Now #27; Best prior run: 7.082/195.68, Was #27
Right Lane: Brad Klein Runs 7.123/194.07, Now #30; Best prior run: 7.207/192.58, Was #30

Left Lane: Tony Gillig Runs 7.079/196.13, Now #20; Best prior run: 7.050/195.53, Was #20
Right Lane: Jim Basko Runs 7.265/190.48, Now #32; Best prior run: 9.360/101.15, Was #34

Basko's car had problems in the shutdown area and took a tour of the desert beyond the end of the strip. No harm, no foul.

Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 12.239/71.52, Now #16; Best prior run: 7.037/195.99, Was #16

3:58 PM Gaines closes the round by duplicating the second-gear shake syndrome several others encountered in the right lane.
