POMONA - Top Fuel Qualifying Notes, Final Session
By Darryl Jackman

Qualifying Suprises!

POMONA, Calif. - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Top Fuel at the 39th annual NHRA AutoZone Winternationals, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, (best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run):
Left Lane: Terry Mullins Runs 5.019/205.47 Now #17, (Best prior run: 4.981/211.73 Was #17)
Right Lane: Ray Stutz Runs 11.362/ 68.05 Now #24, (No prior time)

4:11 PM The sun is starting to set and Top Fuel cars enter from stage left. Cory Mac will sit out this session as he did the one this morning. He was treated at the hospital today for dehydration and the flu. Despite the unplanned day oof, Cory Mac has qualified in the last 136 events he has entered. In this pair Stutz Smokes the tires as Mullins blows up the engine in a big way at a 1000 feet.

Left Lane: Randy Parks Runs 4.772/300.26 Now #12, (Best prior run: 12.170/ 67.22 Was #25)
Right Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 9.294/ 83.78 Now # 5, (Best prior run: 4.625/306.81 Was # 5)

Parks makes the field on his last pass. We just heard that they moved the engine back in the chassis at this race. Seems to have worked. Bernstein was on a good pass until the Goodyears began to smoke.

Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.570/302.89 Now # 3, (Best prior run: 4.670/317.57 Was # 8)
Right Lane: Andrew Cowin Runs 4.779/286.68 Now #13, (Best prior run: 4.809/285.23 Was #15)

Scelzi was on a real winner when he appeared to blow the motor up big time, right in the lights. The young Australian, Cowin, just keeps getting quicker. He didn't appear to hurt anything on that pass.

Left Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 4.634/312.93 Now # 8, (Best prior run: 4.752/304.19 Was #10)
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.683/299.33 Now #10, (Best prior run: 4.901/263.62 Was #16)

Both cars step up on their final qualifier. This was side-by-side to the finish.

Left Lane: Eddie Hill Runs 12.545/ 54.42 Now # 1, (Best prior run: 4.535/313.80 Was # 1)
Right Lane: Doug Kalitta Runs 4.647/312.50 Now # 9, (Best prior run: 4.790/310.84 Was #15)

Hill launches very hard and it acted like a blower belt came off. There was nothing to prove that, but the car just shut off. Kalitta had his hands full on the top end and just missed the top half of the field.

Left Lane: Mike Dunn Runs 4.503/312.35 Now # 1, (Best prior run: 4.564/312.93 Was # 2)
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher No Time Now # 4, (Best prior run: 4.584/306.67 Was # 4)

The quickest run in dragracing history!! Mike Dunn's numbers were: .829, 2.092, 3.017, 271.13mph and 3.805. Incredible. Tony went up in smoke.

Left Lane: Tim Gibson Runs 4.687/295.21 Now #12, (Best prior run: 10.077/ 82.06 Was #24)

The quickest career pass ever for Gibson and Bill Miller Engineering.

Right Lane: Gina Ferraro Runs 5.697/156.97 Now #23, (Best prior run: 6.014/166.48 Was #23)

Gina has to pedal the car to keep it from crossing the center. No big show this time.

Left Lane: Larry Dixon Runs 4.593/311.77 Now # 6, (Best prior run: 4.659/300.80 Was #10)
Right Lane: Connie Kalitta Runs 4.680/308.35 Now #11, (Best prior run: 4.748/292.90 Was #13)

Another fine side-by-side out of this pair. Seemed slow after Dunn's pass.

Left Lane: Bruce Sarver Runs 10.601/ 77.24 Now #14, (Best prior run: 4.769/307.23 Was #14)
Right Lane: David Grubnic Runs 4.825/304.60 Now #18, (Best prior run: 5.218/211.89 Was #21)

You know it's a tough field when Dixon's .59 is good for only #6. For this pair it's no help. Sarver smoked the tires and Grubnic just didn't have the power.

Left Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 4.691/313.00 Now #14, (Best prior run: 4.801/308.71 Was #17)
Right Lane: Joe Amato Runs 9.022/ 89.76 Now #21, (Best prior run: 5.093/223.91 Was #21)

Amato is running the 1998 car that went 4.53 at this track in November of last year. No help. There was not enough lane to hold the power. Vandergriff bumps Cowin on that pass.

Right Lane: Don Lampus Runs 4.711/309.56 Now #15, (Best prior run: 4.907/292.27 Was #19)

Lampus makes it on his last pass. The run was right down the middle and if anything it looked soft. Randy Parks was owner of the bump spot before that run. That ends Top Fuel qualifying at the AutoZone Winternationals.
