POMONA, Calif. - Greetings from Pomona Raceway where the sun has decided to pay us a visit for the first time this weekend. The weather conditions will throw all the race teams another curve today because the temperatures will be much warmer today and with partly-sunny skies the track will be much better today. The temperature is currently 66 degrees with 34% humidity and the relative barometric pressure is 22 inches. Eddie Hill leads Top Fuel qualifying after day one with the fourth quickest pass in NHRA history, 4.535 seconds at 313.80 mph. The 62-year-old veteran said he expected to see times in the 4.40Æs before this weekend is over. Mike Dunn is second, 4.631 at 313.22. Del Worsham was the number one qualifier in Funny Car at the end of the first day of qualifying for the first time since Brainerd, 1991, running 4.968 at 291.51. He was able to negotiate a track that most of the big hitters could not get down, Ron Capps second at 5.003 and 293.79. Yesterday saw the much-anticipated debut of IHRA star Scotty Cannon and he showed us some of his driving skills in a tire-smoking pass. Jerry Toliver's Funny Car pit area is attracting almost as many fans as John Force's camp with his new sponsor, WWF. Shawn McMahon was milling around the area drawing many of the crossover fans to the pit area. Toliver is running the ôStone Coldö Steve Austin-themed car at this race. Warren Johnson, even with his redesigned Firebird, was able to reset both ends of the event record yesterday, 6.926 seconds at 200.20 mph. Son Kurt was right behind Dad in the number two position, 6.942 and 199.79. Larry Kopp leads the Pro Stock Truck field, clocked at a track record 7.598 seconds and 176.88 mph. Randy Daniels sits second at 7.637 and 176.12.
The trucks will conclude qualifying this morning and will have their first
round of eliminations this afternoon. The remaining Professional categories
will conclude qualifying this afternoon and enter eliminations Sunday.
