Crowd Sways NHRA Decision Process
by Larry Sullivan

The Race that was Too Tough to Die

BAYTOWN, Texas - It's 8:15 PM CST. This race was almost postponed to Monday when it stubbornly kept raining, intermittently, a very light mist. NHRA officials were ready to call the event, but the spectators wouldn't let them.

The rain let up several times, stopping completely for almost an hour two different times. Each time the rain stopped, the Safety Safari made several laps on the dragstrip with the "super sucker" and three jet driers. But then, each time, the mist resum ed and track drying came to a stop.

The decision to postpone the event was >< this close every time it started misting again, but a very large and vocal group of fans steadfastly remained in the stands. Their cheers and enthusiastic response every time track drying began again inspired rac e officials to keep trying. Finally, at 8 PM, race officials declared that they would try one more time - but if it started misting again, they would pull the plug.

Now skies are clearing overhead and the staging crew is reporting that the Moon and stars are visible over the tower, so it looks like that one last try will do the trick and we'll be racing soon.

By the way, for those who are confused by the dates / times in the upper left corner of these reports, and the dates on the index listings - the timestamps are 'Greenwich Mean Time' [GMT] (also known as 'Universal Coordinated Time'). They are placed on the reports automatically by the server and we at the FastNews Network have no control over the date or time shown by the server. GMT dates and times are more than a few hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time, so it's already past midnight there. That causes reports posted this evening (November 1) to appear with a date and time early in the morning of November 2.

Goofy? Yeah, we agree, but try talking common sense to a computer.
